2019 Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 60 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 50

Teams looking for legitimate raw power don't need to look any further than Hinds, who spent all summer clearing fences on the showcase circuit. It's still on display this spring with IMG Academy, though questions remain about how much he'll need to hit to tap into that plus tool.

Hinds has performed well on big stages, including Major League Baseball's High School Home Run Derby during All-Star Weekend. It's not just batting practice power, as Hinds did hit two homers during his stint at the Tournament of Stars. But with that power came a lot of swing and miss, with scouts worrying about his pitch recognition, particularly his ability to pick up spin. Ideally, Hinds will be able to stick at third, where his power bat would profile well, and he does have enough arm for the spot, though the jury is still out whether he can man the hot corner long-term, with him better at quick reactive plays while he struggles when he has time to worry about his footwork. He has seen some time in the outfield, but that hasn't gone well.

One scout compared Hinds defensively to Phillies prospect Alec Bohm, who was the No. 3 overall pick in last year's Draft. Hinds won't go that high, but the team who thinks the power will play at the next level could very well take the LSU commit in the first round this June.

If Hinds goes on to have a successful big league career, he may look back at the second half of the 2023 season as a turning point. Long known for his raw power, including during his high school days at IMG Academy in Florida, Hinds brought that potential -- along with a penchant for punching out -- with him to the Reds organization when they went over slot to sign him in the second round of the 2019 Draft. He needed reps, then couldn’t get them because of the pandemic in 2020, a torn meniscus and a broken left hamate over his first two seasons. He got off to a dismal start in Double-A in 2023 before getting hot, allowing him to finish his first healthy year with a 20-20 showing, enough to earn him a spot on the Reds’ 40-man roster.

Hinds has always been able hit the ball out of any park to all fields. The biggest challenge was for him to trust that his ridiculous natural strength and raw power would be there. Over the first two months of 2023, he was lost, striking out more than 40 percent of the time. From June 1 on, however, the right-handed hitter put up a .304/.377/.617 line with 18 homers and a much more palatable 27.7 percent K rate. There’s still work to be done on his approach, like cutting down on how much he chases and recognizing soft stuff better, but he made terrific adjustments as the year went on, giving confidence he’ll continue to learn how to get his power more organically.

While he’s big at 6-foot-4, Hinds is athletic and runs better than one might think, showing he can take the extra base and steal some as well. He’s taken well to the outfield, where his easily plus arm plays. He showed what he’s capable of when he stays on the field, and if the adjustments he made a year ago stick, he could be a power-hitting right fielder in a big league lineup.

As the 2019 Draft approached, Hinds stood out for his tremendous raw power, along with some swing-and-miss concerns -- the type of high school player who would need reps to get his swing down against professional pitching. Because of injuries, he’s had trouble getting those needed at-bats since the Reds took him in the second round of the ’19 Draft and went over slot to sign him for $1.8 million. A quad injury and a torn meniscus kept him sidelined in his debut summer and for much of 2021, while a broken left hamate kept him off the field for nearly two months in 2022.

There were times during that 2022 season that Hinds looked like he was figuring some things out, like when he had a 1.146 OPS in May with High-A Dayton. There were stretches when he would show a better, two-strike-like approach; he hit some home runs under that method, with glimpses of understanding that he can let his natural strength and bat speed work for him, slowing things down to make more consistent contact. That didn’t happen enough, however, as he struck out in 38.8 percent of his plate appearances last year. 

One consistently positive development has been Hinds’ move to the outfield. He’s a very good athlete with a plus arm and he looked very natural in right field, while getting time in left during his Arizona Fall League stint. If Hinds can keep understanding that sometimes less is more, he could still fit the power-over-hit outfield corner profile.

Hinds’ carrying tool when he was coming out of IMG Academy for the 2019 Draft was his right-handed power. The Reds were convinced enough he’d get to it, going over slot with a $1.8 million bonus to sign him away from his LSU commitment in the second round. He hasn’t had as much time on the field to show what he’s capable of, with a quad injury all but cancelling his summer debut and a torn meniscus limiting his 2021 full-season debut to just 54 games. His follow-up season in 2022 was also limited to just 53 games due to a hamate fracture in his left hand.

When Hinds has been on the field and in competition, he’s shown that his power is at least plus and he has as much raw pop as anyone in the organization. He managed to hit 12 homers and slug .542 in his 54-game season a year ago and he can drive the ball to all fields. There’s always going to be a good amount of swing and miss, but he’s shown the ability to make adjustments, chasing a bit less and recognizing spin more consistently. More at-bats will allow him to keep refining his approach.

A better athlete than you might think given his size, Hinds started out his pro career at third base, but partially to help manage his leg issues and partially to let his athleticism play, Hinds started getting time in the outfield and played there exclusively in 2022. His easily plus arm and power could profile very well in right field.

The Reds were so enamored of Hinds’ power potential coming out of IMG Academy in Florida, they gave the high school infielder an above-slot bonus in the second round of the 2019 Draft to keep him from heading to LSU for college. Player and organization didn’t get to know each other very well that summer as a quad injury ended Hinds’ summer debut after just three games. After getting some work in during instructional league play that fall, Hinds finally started to show what the fuss was about in 2020 by holding his own at the Reds’ alternate training site, and he was one of the best players at instructs.

Hinds understandably struggled early against much more advanced competition at the alternate training site, but the Reds were thrilled to see him make adjustments that carried over to instructs. He has off-the-charts raw power and bat speed, with the only question facing him as an amateur was if he’d make enough contact to get to it. After chasing breaking balls a lot early last year, he started recognizing spin better and laid off of them out of the zone more consistently, a very good sign for his offensive potential.

While Hinds has a plus arm and runs better than you’d think for someone his size, especially when underway, the jury is still out whether he’ll outgrow the hot corner. He’s made strides there and the Reds plan to let him play his way off the dirt, but he could be an above-average corner outfielder, with the offensive profile to match, if a move is needed.

Cincinnati’s second-round selection in 2019 as an 18-year-old out of the IMG Academy in Florida, Hinds was signed at above his pick value for nearly $1.8 million. Unfortunately for him and the organization, a quadriceps injury rendered his first pro season all but useless because he was limited to only eight games at rookie-level Greeneville.

That hasn’t dulled optimism about Hinds, however, because his 80 raw power and overall tools as an amateur were very impressive. The Reds will let him play at third base again in 2020 and believe that he has the arm for the position. But they will see what happens there and not commit to him at the hot corner long-term. There is no mistaking he was picked high in the Draft for his bat and not glovework.
