Feni remains as the most devastated flood-affected region in Bangladesh. In some areas, water has risen up to unprecedented levels of over 20 feet above the ground. As strategic partners of BRAC in Bangladesh, Australia and Canada have contributed BDT 70 million (7 crore) and BDT 30 million (3 crore) respectively to ensure more substantive support, such as cash payments, repair and rehabilitation of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, emergency health and nutrition, livelihood restoration, house repairs, agriculture inputs and cattle feed. The worst flash floods in three decades have impacted almost 6 million people in Bangladesh. BRAC, with the support of the Government of Bangladesh and partners, has been on the ground since the start of the crisis and will continue to support families as they recover and rebuild. BRAC has already reached 50,000 families with emergency relief, such as food, drinking water and essential medicines. 5,000 staff have been deployed, and are working around the clock on boats, tractors and on foot to get to the most vulnerable people. BRAC is working around the clock, doing whatever it takes to get to people in all of the flooded districts. This photo was taken in Khagrachari, where boats are going house to house delivering food, safe water and essential medicines. The weather forecast for Feni shows the situation is hopefully going to improve - but even if it does, the need for longer-term recovery and rehabilitation is going to be massive. Bangladesh will need to stand united. I have a humble request to anyone who wants to help - let’s stand with organisations who are responding locally on the ground. They’re the best placed to reach the people in the most need. Let’s avoid all trying to rush into the flooded areas, crowding relief delivery processes. If you can, please join BRAC’s appeal. "My only concern right now is to survive. Only then can we handle everything else that comes our way." I visited a school in Nangalkot sub-district in Cumilla district, southern Bangladesh. The entire ground floor was submerged in water. The floodwater level continued to rise. The water level was receding but many people still continued to rush for shelter in the school. I saw a woman wading through knee-deep water outside the school. Approaching her, I asked with concern, "Apa, I am from BRAC. Is there anything I can help you with? Is your family safe?" She replied, "If you can provide us with some food, it will save our lives. Having good health will be meaningless if we die from hunger." I brought her an emergency relief package. She said she could not return home. Her home was still overflowing with water. Relatives and neighbours came forward to help her. The woman also mentioned how, like others, her feet were infected with skin diseases caused by prolonged exposure to floodwater. She recalled how her life was stable before the flood. Their home was filled with paddy, cows, chickens, and fish in the pond. After living a secure life, she never expected her family to suffer from sudden hunger. BRAC has distributed emergency relief to 35,000 stranded families so far. BRAC has installed a reverse osmosis mobile water treatment plant in Mirsharai Upazila of Chattogram to provide free clean drinking water to people affected by the flood. This machine can supply up to 500 litres of safe water per hour, ensuring that those in need have access to drinking water during this difficult time. Bangladesh is calling. Seven medical camps of BRAC are providing emergency healthcare in five sub-districts under Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, and Chattogram districts where people are most affected by the flood. Essential medications are being provided along with emergency healthcare for pregnant women and children. Yesterday, 585 people, including 67 children under the age of 5, received healthcare. More than half of the patients were women. Skin diseases have started emerging as 60% of the people staying in shelters are suffering from it. Two families affected by the flood took shelter at the BRAC office in Fulgazi sub-district in Feni district, Chattogram division, southern Bangladesh. As water levels started receding yesterday, the families decided to go back home. During their stay in the shelter, a woman from one of the families shared her experience with the office’s branch manager, Mozzemel Haque, about how her family managed to reach the shelter. It was stressful and shocking. The night the floodwater suddenly started pouring in around their house, it reached up till their doorsteps. The woman recalled deciding with her family that it was safe to stay home. Everyone assumed that the water level would not rise above the house’s doorsteps. As the night went on, the water level continued to rise. Floodwater seeped into the woman’s home. By dawn, it reached up till everyone’s knees. This incident was beyond their comprehension. Realising how much they underestimated the situation, the woman and her family started looking for a safe space to take shelter in along with the next door neighbours. They headed out and walked through the floodwater and eventually reached a filling station far from home. The station was yet to be submerged. The families could not stay for long as the water level continued to rise. Having no other choice, they found two water drums and a piece of wood and used it to make a raft. Women and children sat on the raft while the men pushed it along. After a difficult journey, the families finally reached the BRAC office. They were in a safe place but they still worried about the state of their belongings. Taking a leap of faith, the families decided to go back home to retrieve anything worth saving.
