Volunteers providing Info & event about ADHD, autism, neurodiversity and neurodivergence for families, teachers, schools

About us

We were called ADHD, ASC and LD (Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia) Belgium. We are an organisation of Volunteers, who provide a network of support, evidence-based information, and resources for English-speaking Families, and Adults, affected by Neurodiversity. We are based in Belgium, and we also provide resources for teachers and other professionals who work with neurodivergent people. We hope we can spread awareness about these particular neurodivergent conditions, and reduce the stigma surrounding ADHD and others, which still exists today - mainly because of media misinformation - which is something that has a significant effect on many children and adolescents. Please take the time to look carefully at the information here and let others know where they can find authentic evidence-based information and resources about these misunderstood and much-maligned 'disorders', which are unfortunately very real, and which need early identification, and accommodations to enable children and adults to live their best lives, and achieve to their maximum potential. We have a Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/adhdbelgium and a Facebook discussion group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/addysasc We have a new project - Neurodiverse Brains in the Workplace, talking about Adult life. Our goal is to assist Employers; and Employees with Neurodiverse Brains (ie people with ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia/DCD, Dysgraphia, autistic people, and people who are gifted - and many individuals who display the qualities of 2 or 3 of these conditions). * LinkedIn - Neurodiverse Brains in the Workplace Page - https://www.linkedin.com/company/neurodiverse-brains-in-the-workplace/ * Facebook - Neurodiverse Brains in the Workplace discussion group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1581193268665674

WooHoo! Cynthia Hammer’s best-selling and award-winning book "Living with Inattentive ADHD" is now available as an #audiobook. Read by a voice actor, it is 6 hours long and priced to sell at $7.99. All proceeds benefit the non-profit organization, Inattentive ADHD Coalition, (www.iadhd.org). Listen to Living with Inattentive ADHD: Climbing the Circular Staircase by MSW, Cynthia Hammer (audiobooks.com) Join us on Sunday 8 September to meet Cynthia Hammer, MSW, and hear more about her book "Living with Inattentive ADHD" a memoir and self-help book that is a best-seller on Amazon and is now available as an audiobook. One reviewer says “This is my new favorite ADHD book, and I recommend it now to all of my ADHD friends, colleagues, and ADHD coaching clients. Cynthia has done a beautiful job describing her lived experience, her struggles and challenges, and how she created a life that works for her and her family, building confidence, peace, and contentment, and a life she feels proud of. Cynthia bares all--the difficult and even terrifying--and I am so grateful she did, because life with an ADHD brain challenges us to our core, our very sense of identity, and can erode our self-worth. To have someone be so transparent is truly a gift to our community. We need to share our struggles and not feel we have to mask and hide so much. This is a must read.” Cynthia is the Executive Director, of the Inattentive ADHD Coalition. The mission of the iadhd is that all children with inattentive ADHD are diagnosed by age 8, and adults with inattentive ADHD are readily and correctly diagnosed when they seek help. She is the founder of  FINDtheADHDgirls.org, a project of the iadhd to get girls with ADHD diagnosed by age 8, as girls are often missed. Join us on September 8th to hear more from Cynthia https://lnkd.in/efiKZ8aY .

Really excited to share that I’ve just heard that Jessica Kingsley Publishers are going to record an audio version of my book A Different Way to Learn: Neurodiversity and Self-Directed Education. So many of you have asked about this and I‘ve always suggested that you contact the publisher since it’s their decision not mine. They have now made that decision. I’m particularly pleased because audio versions make books accessible to a far wider audience. It’s only just been signed off but I’ll keep you posted. A Different Way to Learn is currently 20% off if you order it directly from the Jessica Kingsley Publishers with the code SCH24. (Illustration by Eliza Fricker from A Different Way To Learn)

what is non verbal learning disorder

I have the same disabilities as Gus Walz. Here’s what I want you to know: VP nominee Tim Walz’s son Gus and I both have ADHD, anxiety, and nonverbal learning disorder. (I’m also autistic and have dyscalculia, which Gus does not.) 1. Nonverbal Learning Disorder is misunderstood. 😐 The name NVLD (or NLD) is problematic — like most names that include “disorder” — and more than a bit confusing. NVLD does **NOT** mean we don’t/can’t talk. (Nothing wrong with being nonspeaking, but that requires different supports.) NVLD means we struggle with things *not* related to verbal skills/words, especially visual-spatial processing, social communication, and executive functioning. It’s not part of the DSM (yet) but does have a standard set of traits. (Resource in comments.) And no, it isn’t “just another description for autism/dyscalculia/etc.” For me, it can be my most disabling disability AND the source of my greatest skills. 2. Ableism is very real and far too common common. 👎 When Ann Coulter started a cascade of people mocking Gus online, folks who haven’t personally experienced ableism saw the reality of ableism in 2024. And yes, it WAS ableism *even if* people didn’t know Gus is disabled. He was mocked for behavior “atypical” of a teen boy. NVLD is non-visible and impacts our understanding of and adherence to social norms. ADHD impacts how we regulate and process emotions. There’s a direct line from neurodivergent traits to the cruel comments. I was glad to see Nancy Doyle address the emotional/tone policing in her article about Gus (in comments). Sadly, some of the supportive content has been (unintentionally) ableist too. I hope the people who stood up to ableism this week don’t waver or disappear. Perhaps it’s a good time for everyone to start Unlearning Ableism. 3. Kids. Aren’t. Content. 🖥 No child should be mocked to make a political point because their parent is running for office. That applies to *every* child, no matter the political persuasion of their parent. No matter their abilities and disabilities. I hope that Guz Walz doesn’t have to continue being a lesson for everyone and just gets to be a kid. Neurodivergent people’s ways of interacting with our environments and our vulnerabilities are not content. If we choose to share, that’s up to us as individuals. This is an important reminder to ALL neurodiversity advocates: You don’t have to consider yourself disabled to experience ableism — it’s down to how others perceive you. Trying to distance neurodivergence from disability only fragments the coalition of people who should be fighting together for change. This week a few cruel posts were deleted, but ableism won’t disappear so easily. Note: This is not a political post. This is a post about basic human decency. Views are my own. #Disability #Neurodiversity #FightAbleism

Mapping the impact of Developmental Coordination Disorder and working towards earlier detection and support

Leren #zwemmen...
