Last week, some of the biggest fintech news was that Italy's UniCredit has agreed to acquire European Banking-as-a-Service platform Vodeno and Belgian digital bank Aion Bank for around €370m. CEO Andrea Orcel said, "This investment enables us to leverage Vodeno's technology and talent to innovate and develop for our broader group, entering new markets across Europe." Vodeno supports NatWest's embedded banking platform, Boxed, following a £120 million investment in 2022. We've watched with tremendous interest over the past few years as the Vodeno story has played out, and we have been extremely fortunate to have some of the rock stars on the podcast. 'Shaul David, a fintech and embedded finance consultant, said the deal is a validation for the Baas business model.' 'Lars Markull said (Vodeno with) the addition of Aion Bank has made the deal interesting because now Unicredit can make a play in the Baas space without having to manage the compliance in-house.'
