🔓 How to unlock European competitiveness by leveraging investment and trade This was the focus of a panel discussion at the Salzburg Summit 2024, organised by our member - the Federation of Austrian Industries (IV). On this panel, BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer underlined the need for rapid political action at EU level to improve investment conditions by massively reducing bureaucracy and regulatory burdens, deepening the single market, and pursuing an open and ambitious trade agenda. "In the coming months, we must succeed in signalling to companies in and outside Europe that it is worth investing in Europe again", he emphasised. Given the sluggish outlook for the European economy, Beyrer particularly stressed the urgent need to close the energy cost gap with our global competitors: this has widened considerably in recent years and continues to put European companies at a severe economic disadvantage. 💡 To read our recent study on this topic, in partnership with Compass Lexecon, and BusinessEurope's policy priorities, click here: https://lnkd.in/dF6btH44. #SalzburgSummit #Energy4CompetitiveEU #trade #singlemarket

How will the EU energy system's transition towards 2050 impact the EU’s competitiveness? What's the best way forward? Today at the Informal Energy Council in Budapest, our DG Markus J. Beyrer presented the results of a new in-depth study with Compass Lexecon. 💡 Key takeaways from the study highlight the need to address the carbon cost differential and the energy competitiveness gap. “We're calling for a massive deployment of all necessary energy sources and infrastructure to prevent company relocations and investment leakage,” Beyrer emphasised. What’s next for EU-Türkiye trade relations? On 8 June, together with our member federations TÜSİAD and Türkiye İşveren Sendikaları Konfederasyonu / Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (TİSK), BusinessEurope participated in the first EU-Türkiye High-Level Trade Dialogue. This important event was chaired by European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and Türkiye’s Trade Minister Ömer Bolat. From a trade and economic perspective, the EU and Türkiye are natural partners due to our geographical proximity and closely interlinked economies and supply chains. The benefits of the Customs Union Agreement are clear: our trade in goods is 60% higher than if we were to trade under WTO rules. However, as our Director General Markus J. Beyrer emphasised, “a number of trade irritants persist, and we need to find effective ways to address them.” The modernisation of the Customs Union, including all EU Member States, is a top priority for us. We propose: ➡ Extending the Customs Union scope to cover all goods and services #trade, public procurement, the protection of intellectual property rights, and rules on state aid ➡ Adjusting the agreement to today’s ambitions in the areas of #sustainability and the #digitaleconomy ➡ Including an effective and neutral dispute settlement mechanism Given the close economic integration, Türkiye’s alignment with the EU acquis is particularly important as we accelerate our efforts towards the green and digital transitions. #EUTurkiye #CustomsUnion

📢 New study shows that Europe’s energy price gap will worsen without urgent action Today, we published an in-depth study showing that a more competitive energy and climate transition is still possible but only if swift action is taken by EU legislators during the next EU cycle. Conducted in collaboration with Compass Lexecon, the study looks at 2️⃣ scenarios: the Managed Transition - with supportive EU policies 🌱 and the Frustrated Transition – with policies delaying necessary investments 🛑 The difference? Up to 40% lower energy prices, thanks to renewables developed in the least costly locations and the roadblocks to their development lifted. 🗨 “High energy prices continue to seriously hamper the global competitiveness of European companies and industrial output. Securing energy at competitive prices will be central to preserving Europe’s industrial base,” commented our Director General Markus J. Beyrer. The study finds that even with supportive EU policies, energy costs in Europe will be at least 50% higher than that in the US, China and India by 2050. We need urgent action at EU level to bridge this gap so that Europe can achieve climate neutrality by 2050 without deindustrialising. Crucial policy choices are needed to decisively tackle the carbon cost differential and energy competitiveness gap. We are also calling for a massive deployment of all necessary energy sources and infrastructure. This will not only enhance the security of Europe’s energy systems but will also help reduce the overall cost of the transition. 🔎 Check out the full study and our policy recommendations: https://shorturl.at/2EFhF #Energy4CompetitiveEU

Standing room only at BusinessEurope’s event this afternoon on European Economic Security with Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis! During this very engaging and timely discussion, our Director General Markus J. Beyrer highlighted our view that the protection of vital security interests must not be used as cover for disguised protectionism, and that it must not endanger the integrity of the Single Market and the free movement of capital. I am honored to announce my re-election for a two-year term as President of BusinessEurope at our annual general meeting in Budapest. As my previous term concludes, I am grateful for the trust placed in me by BusinessEurope's 42 member federations from 36 countries during this pivotal period for Europe. Two years ago in Prague, I shared a vision centered on Competitiveness. Back then, my concerns about Europe's potential deindustrialization and declining competitiveness were seen as overly cautious. However, challenges such as the US IRA, weak GDP growth, soaring energy costs, and diminishing investments in Europe have underscored these concerns. While we commend the Commission for its efforts during the pandemic and support for Ukraine, these achievements are unsustainable without a robust business and industrial base. Our goal moving forward is to turn the Competitiveness agenda into concrete actions. We need to transition from a reactive stance to a proactive strategy. I am fortunate to draw upon the vast knowledge, experience, and ideas within BusinessEurope I am proud BusinessEurope has been recognized as the most influential, active, and important voice in Brussels during this term. Competitiveness cannot wait. A strong, sustainable, resilient Europe begins with an innovative and thriving business sector ready to tackle future challenges and seize opportunities. #rebooteurope #businesseurope Thank you for your continued trust and strong support Federation of Austrian Industry, VBO FEB, Bulgarian Industrial Association BIA, Hrvatska udruga poslodavaca - Croatian Employers` Association, Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (OEB) - Ομοσπονδία Εργοδοτών & Βιομηχάνων (ΟΕΒ), Confederation of Danish Employers, Svaz průmyslu a dopravy ČR / Confederation of Industry CZ, Danish Industry, Eesti Tööandjate Keskliit / Estonian Employers' Confederation, Elinkeinoelämän keskusliitto EK – Confederation of Finnish Industries, MEDEF, BDA | Confederation of German Employers' Associations, BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V., SEV Hellenic Federation of Enterprises | ΣΕΒ σύνδεσμος επιχειρήσεων και βιομηχανιών, MGYOSZ/BusinessHungary, Samtök iðnaðarins, Samtök atvinnulífsins, Ibec, Confindustria, Latvijas Darba devēju konfederācija, Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, FEDIL - The Voice of Luxembourg's Industry, The Malta Chamber, Unija poslodavaca Crne Gore, NHO, Konfederacja Lewiatan, CIP - Confederação Empresarial de Portugal, Confederatia Patronala Concordia, Anis San Marino, Unija poslodavaca Srbije, The National Union of Employers, ZDS Slovenia, CEOE, Svenskt Näringsliv, economiesuisse, Schweizerischer Arbeitgeberverband / Union patronale suisse / Unione svizzera degli imprenditori, VNO-NCW, Türkiye İşveren Sendikaları Konfederasyonu / Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (TİSK), TÜSİAD, Federation of Employers of Ukraine, Union of Ukrainian Entrepreneurs (SUP) and CBI (Confederation of British Industry).

📢 High time for a new European competitiveness deal: Our message to the Hungarian EU Presidency Today, Presidents and Directors General of our member federations gathered in Budapest at the invitation of our Hungarian member federation MGYOSZ – BusinessHungary. We shared critical business priorities with Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, and Màrton Nagy, Minister for the National Economy. Our main message, as stated by President Fredrik Persson: “Now is the time to fill with life the new European competitiveness deal. This will ensure the European Union remains home to successful companies that create quality jobs as part of an economically successful green and digital transition.” How to get there? In a nutshell: ➡️ Better regulation within a well-integrated Single Market ➡️ Open strategic autonomy to strengthen Europe globally ➡️ An ambitious industrial strategy for a resilient future During our visit to Budapest, we also exchanged views with Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute and the author of the recent report on the future of the Single Market. We welcomed his call for a reboot of the Single Market to meet the demands of today's global landscape, as outlined in his report. 🔗 Check out our declaration: shorturl.at/5YBEO #RebootEurope #HU24EU FEDIL - The Voice of Luxembourg's Industry CIP - Confederação Empresarial de Portugal Federation of Austrian Industries BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V. Very good discussion about the future of trade policy at the Prague European Summit- Europe must not follow the protectionist wave, it needs to uphold the rules, safeguard its economic interests and continue to provide new trade and investment opportunities for its companies.
