Exciting EU Energy Market Reforms ! ⚡ The EU has agreed on a reform revising the electricity, gas and hydrogen market. Main goals? 🌱 To accelerate investment in renewable energies 📉 Combat price volatility 🤝 Foster flexibility and energy sharing The reform promotes Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), aiming at providing electricity at stable price on the long run. It also promotes bidirectional Contracts For Difference (CFD), by requiring that all future public investments in new renewable energy production facilities be subject to this regime. In the event of an energy crisis, governments will be able to intervene in the market, to support households and companies in difficulty. 🚀Where does the EU stand on its journey to net zero? ⚠ The second annual progress report from the European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) highlights positive strides in most sectors and cross-cutting areas. However, the pace remains too slow to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. 🌍Towards a Carbon-Neutral Belgium by 2050 ! 🌍 In an article by La Libre, our colleague Simon Lalieu (il/lui) analyzed how lifestyle changes can enable Belgium to reach climate neutrality by 2050. 🔹 Transport: A 5% reduction in overall demand, increased carpooling and carsharing, and a 100% electric shift for the remaining vehicles. 🔹 Housing: A 10% reduction in the average size of homes, a renovation rate of 3% per year by 2030 and until 2050, and 85% of heating systems using heat pumps. 🔹 Agriculture: A 25% reduction in animal protein consumption and 60% of red meat replaced by white meat. 🔹 Durability of equipment: Increasing the lifetime of equipment (computers, dishwashers, televisions, etc.). These measures could reduce the average CO2 emissions per capita from 9.5 to approximately 6.1 tons per year by 2050. 🌍 La Belgique face à ses limites planétaires! C'est le sujet que le CeRAC - Centre for Risk assessment of climate change a confié à CLIMACT en début d'année. Les résultats sont sans équivoques, sur les 6 limites analysées, 5 d'entre elles sont déjà dépassées en Belgique.
