🔍 Energy Advances and Challenges for Belgium Belgium's energy transition is making steady progress, but significant challenges remain to meet the 2030 targets. 🎯 Energy Targets for 2030: 🔹 21.7% share of renewable energy sources (RES) in final energy consumption (vs. 14.1% in 2023). 🔹 11.7% reduction in final energy consumption across the EU compared to 2020 projections. 🔹 Belgium's contribution is estimated at 9.5%, below the indicative target of 12.9%. 📉 Energy Consumption: 🔹 -6.2% decrease in primary energy consumption since 2022. 🔹 Petroleum products still dominate final consumption at 48.1%, while natural gas accounts for 24.6%. 🏭 Energy Production: 🔹 Nuclear energy leads with 59.4% of primary energy production in 2023, followed by renewables at 33.9%. 🔹 Wind/Solar make up 51.3% of total installed electrical capacity. 🌍 Electricity Production: 🔹 Significant increase in wind power generation (+26.6%), while biomass-based production saw a sharp decline (-37.9%). 🔹 Offshore wind farms generated 8.0 TWh of electricity in 2023, equivalent to the consumption of 2.3 million households. 💡 Electricity Prices: The average household in Belgium paid 40.6 cents per kWh for electricity in 2023, a 2.5% increase compared to 2022. 🔗 Despite progress, Belgium remains 76.2% dependent on energy imports in 2023. The energy transition is underway, but a collective effort will be required to achieve the ambitious 2030 goals. You want to participate to the effort? Reach out to us! CLIMACT Executive Talk: Meet Guy Janssens 🌍 We had the pleasure of meeting Guy Janssens, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, during our CLIMACT Executive Talk on April 25th. Guy Janssens provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition. As a major port with significant energy needs for electricity, fuel, heat, and feedstock for the chemical industry, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is pivotal in driving decarbonization and green energy innovation. Climact calculated the full scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions inventory according to the GHG Protocol for Port of Antwerp-Bruges, identified key actions to reduce their emissions together with their teams and defined a climate vision and targets aligned with science. 🌍 Replay webinar: Planetary Limits at Belgian Level On 27 June 2024, our webinar ‘Planetary Limits at the Belgian Level’ took place, presented by our colleagues Jeanne Dumoulin, Adrien Lefebvre and Simon Lalieu. These have explored whether Belgium is operating within its safe environmental limits, by examining six global limits and their application to the Belgian context. The objectives of the webinar were to : 🔹 Clarify the planetary boundaries framework. 🔹 Present the methodologies to downscale this framework at Belgian level and their limitations. 🔹 Discuss Belgium’s environmental footprint, compared with its fair share of the safe operating space. 📽️ Watch the replay here : https://lnkd.in/dYFSwyGb #Environment #Sustainability #Belgium #Climat

🍾 Congratulations to our client Spadel for getting her Net-zero targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative with our support ! 👉 Reminder: net-zero targets means -90% GHG emissions over the entire value chain (scope 1,2 & 3) by 2050, and aligning 2030 targets with a 1.5°C trajectory. Such approved targets form a clear signal to stakeholders like investors, clients, suppliers and employees who take climate ambition into account. 👋 Congratulations to the team Laurie MECREANT, Koen Vanbrabant, Ann Vandenhende, Marc du Bois and to my colleague Gaétane Ronsmans for the hard work to get there ! #climateaction #sciencebasedtargets #netzero
SBTi has officially approved our net-zero targets 2030-2050! Climate change demands urgent action. The year 2023 was pivotal in laying the groundwork for the future. In December, we submitted our updated SBTi targets, to align with the net-zero framework. Preparing these targets was a real Spadel team effort, with involvement from different departments and business units. Today, we are proud to announce that these targets were officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)! Concretely, Spadel commits to reaching net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050, versus a 2022 base year. More details on the near and long-term targets can be found at the SBTi website (https://lnkd.in/d6-Ef-3J) This commitment reflects our determination to be part of the global movement for ambitious decarbonization and to encourage positive climate policies. These goals are part of our overall sustainability strategy and demonstrate our long-term commitment. We thank all our partners and collaborators for their continued support and invite them to join us in our efforts for a more sustainable future. #SBTi #Spadel #2030Targets #2050Targets #NetZero #CSR #Sustainability

Learning everyday with a fantastic and well experienced Regulatory Team! We are here to help (non exhaustive list): ✅ green energy producers (i.e. support schemes for renewables, CRM, permitting, etc.) ✅ public authorities (i.e. transposition of European law, adaptation of the regulatory framework, etc.) ✅ citizens and associations (i.e. energy communities, etc.) Don't hesitate to reach out!
Exciting EU Energy Market Reforms ! ⚡ The EU has agreed on a reform revising the electricity, gas and hydrogen market. Main goals? 🌱 To accelerate investment in renewable energies 📉 Combat price volatility 🤝 Foster flexibility and energy sharing The reform promotes Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), aiming at providing electricity at stable price on the long run. It also promotes bidirectional Contracts For Difference (CFD), by requiring that all future public investments in new renewable energy production facilities be subject to this regime. In the event of an energy crisis, governments will be able to intervene in the market, to support households and companies in difficulty. In addition, the reform encourages citizens to share their energy with additional legal provisions to the current framework. 💡 🌍 At Climact, within our Regulatory department specialized in Energy, we provide day-to-day support to energy players, whether they be green energy producers, public authorities or citizens and associations. Don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss how we can help you in your energy transition!
