⛈ How can we mitigate bad weather impacts on aviation ✈️? 👀 Watch our new #AllTogetherNow2024 video explaining why this is a 🔝 priority as we manage peak traffic this summer! Last year, there were 48% more en-route #ATFM air traffic flow management weather delays compared to 2022, creating more uncertainty and increasing delays and cross-border bottlenecks. 👉 To manage better peak traffic ✈️ this summer ☀️, the EUROCONTROL #NM Network Manager is collaborating closely with meteorological services to share weather data with ops actors, and help everyone in the network better anticipate forecasted adverse weather conditions. This will help mitigate those bad weather impacts on network traffic ✈️ by ensuring more reliable planning, and providing the network with greater consistency & stability. Improving adverse weather management is one of our 5️⃣ 🔝priorities for this summer that we are encouraging all aviation actors to focus on, as we prepare for busy summer traffic ☀️✈️ together. The other priorities include: ✈ prioritising first rotation ✈ delivering agreed capacities ✈ realistic schedules including turnaround times ✈ disciplined flight plan execution. Supporting the Georgian CAA 🇬🇪 in their journey towards U-space implementation. Over the summer, our #EIH EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub drone specialists Cristina Altemir Rey & Norberto Vera Velez conducted a #Uspace #ARA airspace risk assessment workshop in Tbilisi with representatives from: 📌 Georgian Civil Aviation Agency 📌 SAKAERONAVIGATSIA, the Georgian ANSP 📌 Georgian Ministry of Defense 📌 Georgian Aviation University 📌 Drone operators 📌 Aerodrome operators. Organised by the EUROCONTROL Support to States team, the workshop discussed EU Regulation 2021/664 on #UAS operations and U-space, along with the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub's #ARA method & lessons learned. This regulation is crucial for the development of U-space, which refers to the airspace designated for the operation of uncrewed aircraft systems (#UAS), commonly known as #drones. The main goal was to help participants understand U-space regulations better, and to see how these rules can be effectively adapted & integrated into Georgia's aviation system. 📣 Feedback? Participants really appreciated the insights from EUROCONTROL's drone experts, with the workshop forming an effective stepping stone on their journey towards implementing U-space. The latest issue of our #EuropeanAviationOverview takes a look at air traffic ✈️ in week 31: 34,203 average daily flights ✈️, ▼0.5% vs week 30 (a normal dip that matches the normal seasonal evolution of intra-European flights), but nevertheless ⬆️5% higher than this time in 2023. Week 31 (29.07-04.08) saw en-route Air Traffic Control (#ATC) delays again very high at 5.4 minutes per flight (although slightly lower than in week 30), with almost 50% being driven by weather, and the rest by capacity & staffing. There was a clear impact on arrival punctuality ⏰ with only 62.6% of flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule. Watch our 🎥 explainer video on the key SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking research project #ECHO2 (co-funded by the #EU and led by EUROCONTROL) focused on enabling safe, efficient and scalable operations above conventional flight levels. Higher airspace (approximately 60,000 ft) is no longer exclusive to space rockets & military planes, but nowadays is hosting an expanding range of vehicles, including long-endurance balloons, high-altitude platform systems (#HAPS), plus supersonic & hypersonic aircraft. With missions varying from connectivity & surveillance to passenger transport & satellite services, these vehicles with vastly different operating characteristics present a new airspace management challenge. #ECHO2 is paving the way towards integrating Higher Altitude Operations #HAO into air traffic management #ATM. The project will prototype Space Traffic integration into our #NMOC the EUROCONTROL Network Manager Operations Centre, along with procedures for efficiently managing space operations that transit commercial traffic in the NM area. 🎥 Curious? Great news for the future of the European #aviation sector! ✈ The European Commission has announced over €7bn in EU grants from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to support projects revolutionising the Trans-European Transport Network, connecting railways, waterways, ports, and airports across the EU. Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) — the EU's instrument for strategic investment in infrastructure — has a strong emphasis on addressing climate change and promoting sustainable travel.
