📍 🇨🇦 Our Director-General Raúl Medina Caballero is in Montreal to attend the 14th #ICAO Air Navigation Conference and for bilateral meetings with key stakeholders from our #aviation sector. Yesterday he met with the International Civil Aviation Organization Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano to discuss some of the topics addressed at the #ANC14 Conference, which is focused this year on the theme "Performance Improvement Driving Sustainability". This meeting was followed by an exchange with Toshiyuki 俊之 Onuma 大沼, Senior Deputy Director-General of the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB). EUROCONTROL has been building a solid cooperation with Japan, sharing our mutual expertise and data, and building knowledge on important topics for the future of our #aviation sector. Through these solid partnerships, we continue to forge a path towards a more #sustainable and #efficient aviation future and accelerate progress towards our #RaisingtheBar goals. 🤝

33,680 daily flights ✈️ across the European aviation network in Week 33 (12-18.08), ▼1% vs Week 32 - but ⬆️4.2% vs the same period in 2023. That's typical for mid-August & also reflects the public holiday in many countries on Thu 15.08. Network traffic for August up to the 18th was at 98% of 2019 levels, close to our latest base STATFOR forecast (97%) – but at State level, the situation is more diverse, with some ACCs in the South-East axis experiencing traffic growth well beyond that. Year-to-date global traffic? 95% of 2019, ⬆️5% vs 2023. ⛈️ Convective weather resulted in significant delays across the week (3.5 minutes/flight, on average) – notably at Palma on Wednesday to Friday, triggering some diversions & cancellations. For July, around €1 billion in en-route air navigation charges were billed, ⬆️8% vs 2023. Read our latest #EuropeanAviationOverview 👇 https://lnkd.in/e9YbFKrK

Showcasing our expertise & exchanging on global #ATM matters with a high-level delegation from Thailand 🇹🇭, one of Southeast Asia's busiest aviation ✈️ actors. 👉 The delegation led by AEROTHAI - Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd, Thailand's air navigation service provider, also included staff from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and the Royal Thai Air Force – all deeply interested in understanding more about EUROCONTROL's unique air traffic management expertise. Key briefing topics included: 📌 how EUROCONTROL manages the European aviation network ✈️ 📌 the EUROCONTROL Network Manager #NM's range of #B2B services 📌 airspace design 📌 Free Route Airspace (#FRA) 📌 Our unique civil-military cooperation approach, including Flexible Use of Airspace (#FUA), #LARA & #cybersecurity. Also on the table – visits to both our operational centres, the #NMOC Network Manager Operations Centre at HQ, where the #NM manages busy traffic flows across the European aviation network; and our ops room at #MUAC, Europe's only cross-border civil-military air navigation service provider, from which our #ATCOs manage the upper airspace over Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and north-west Germany, one of Europe's busiest and most complex airspace areas.

🌍 Take the first #PRCdatachallenge and develop an open-source model that can accurately predict actual aircraft takeoff weights (#ATOW) based on OpenSky data – and potentially share in a €5K prize pot! 👉 The competition is being organised by EUROCONTROL's Performance Review Commission (#PRC) in partnership with the OpenSky Network as part of the Open Performance Data Initiative. The challenge aims to improve the way the impact of air navigation on climate change is measured by developing validated open-source models that can estimate emissions more accurately. 📌 Our challenge calls on participants to develop a machine-learning #ML model 🤖 capable of better estimating the ATOW of a flown flight. ATOW is important: it's a key factor in estimating fuel burnt and related gaseous emissions. But openly available data on ATOW – and an accurate open-source solution to calculate it – are really lacking… For the challenge we've opened up access to a huge dataset 📊 of in-flight aircraft trajectories containing the trajectories of 369,013 intra-European flights, including their ETOW or estimated takeoff weight. So, team up with fellow #avgeeks or go solo, and see if your data skills can help drive #AviationSustainability as we look to solve the #ATOW challenge via an accurate fuel burn estimation model. 👉 Are you ready to accept this mission? Go to https://lnkd.in/eJHXCgVW to learn more & take the challenge. ⏰ You'll need to submit your #ML model 🤖 by 28 October 2024! 🥇 The winners will be announced at the 12th edition of the OpenSky Symposium in Hamburg on 7-8 November 2024, when the prize pot will be shared among the selected finalists.

Supporting the Georgian CAA 🇬🇪 in their journey towards U-space implementation. Over the summer, our #EIH EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub drone specialists Cristina Altemir Rey & Norberto Vera Vélez conducted a #Uspace #ARA airspace risk assessment workshop in Tbilisi with representatives from: 📌 Georgian Civil Aviation Agency 📌 SAKAERONAVIGATSIA, the Georgian ANSP 📌 Georgian Ministry of Defense 📌 Georgian Aviation University 📌 Drone operators 📌 Aerodrome operators. Organised by the EUROCONTROL Support to States team, the workshop discussed EU Regulation 2021/664 on #UAS operations and U-space, along with the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub's #ARA method & lessons learned. This regulation is crucial for the development of U-space, which refers to the airspace designated for the operation of uncrewed aircraft systems (#UAS), commonly known as #drones. The main goal was to help participants understand U-space regulations better, and to see how these rules can be effectively adapted & integrated into Georgia's aviation system. 📣 Feedback? Participants really appreciated the insights from EUROCONTROL's drone experts, with the workshop forming an effective stepping stone on their journey towards implementing U-space. We are looking forward to supporting Georgia in future U-space initiatives! More info: Farah Luu

The latest issue of our #EuropeanAviationOverview takes a look at air traffic ✈️ in week 31: 34,203 average daily flights ✈️, ▼0.5% vs week 30 (a normal dip that matches the normal seasonal evolution of intra-European flights), but nevertheless ⬆️5% higher than this time in 2023. Week 31 (29.07-04.08) saw en-route Air Traffic Control (#ATC) delays again very high at 5.4 minutes per flight (although slightly lower than in week 30), with almost 50% being driven by weather, and the rest by capacity & staffing. There was a clear impact on arrival punctuality ⏰ with only 62.6% of flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule.
