Spending time in Brussels this summer? Visit the Citizens' Garden - the former private garden of Antoine Wiertz, a Belgian painter and sculptor - and take a moment to relax in a serene, green oasis in the European Quarter. Thanks to a 50-year, €1 lease between the Parliament and the Belgian state, as well as the investment and renovation by the European Parliament, the garden opened to the public for the for the first time in 2020. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, and it hosts various cultural events.

Did you know that women make up almost two-fifths of the new European Parliament?  This is above the world average for national parliaments (26.9% at the beginning of 2024) and above the European average for national parliaments (31.6%). From a low 16.6% in the first directly elected legislature in 1979, the percentage of female Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) rose continuously after each election, reaching 41% following the 2019 election. While female representation in the European Parliament has more than doubled since the first direct elections in 1979, in 2024 the share of women has decreased slightly.

Today is World Humanitarian Day.  Today we honour humanitarians all over the world.  Today we pay tribute to their bravery and perseverance. Today we highlight their unwavering commitment to helping people in precarious situations inside and outside of Europe.   The EU is collectively the biggest donor for international aid in the world, providing over €50 billion a year to help overcome poverty and advance global development.    The European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department provides humanitarian assistance inside and outside of Europe for over 30 years, with the help of a field network and humanitarian partners.   Parliament oversees the implementation of humanitarian measures and has regularly insisted on closing the widening gap between global humanitarian needs and available funding.
