Women have shaped the history of Europe but often their contributions are not properly recognised. For example, you may have heard of Altiero Spinelli and the Manifesto of Ventotene, but many people do not know about the brave woman who made this publication possible. Today we pay tribute to Ursula Hirschmann who was born #OnThisDay 111 years ago. Ursula Hirschmann was responsible for smuggling the text written secretly on cigarette paper by prisoners on the island of Ventotene to the Italian mainland. There she helped draft and disseminate it, where it was widely read by those fighting with the Italian resistance against the Nazis.  She went on to become one of the co-founders of the European Federalist Movement in 1943 and was involved in organising the first international federalist congress in 1945. The ideas she championed shaped the debate on what a future European Union would look like. But her activism did not stop after the Second World War. In 1975, Hirschmann founded the Femmes pour l’Europe (Women for Europe) association in Brussels, a movement that brought together women from both feminist and political circles and that continues to advocate for gender equality to this day.

Today we remember the Italian politician Altiero Spinelli who was born #OnThisDay in 1907. He was one of the pioneers of the European Union, imagining a united Europe even when war was raging on the continent.   He drew up the Ventotene Manifesto together with other political prisoners while imprisoned by the Italian fascist regime between 1927 and 1943. Initially called Towards a Free and United Europe, the manifesto sets out how Spinelli proposes to connect European states to such an extent that it would be impossible to enter into war ever again. The first elected Parliament offered him the chance to work on some of the ideas born during his confinement on the island of Ventotene. The culmination of his political career was the so-called Spinelli plan adopted in 1984 by the European Parliament. This text provided an important inspiration for the strengthening of the EU treaties in the next decades and introduced the concept of Union citizenship and the primacy of European law.  The European Parliament’s main building in Brussels is named in his honour.

Although unemployment in the EU is decreasing overall, the unemployment rate varies significantly among EU countries from 2.7% in Czechia to 11.7% in Spain.  📈 Following the 2008 crisis, the unemployment rate in the EU peaked at 11.7% in April 2013.  📊 At the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis in March 2020, the unemployment rate in the EU was 6.5% but at the height of the pandemic it reached 7.8% in August 2020. 📉 By May 2024, the unemployment rate in the EU was down again to 6%, stable compared to March 2024 and to April 2023.   EU countries are still primarily responsible for employment and social policies. However, EU initiatives complement national efforts to reduce unemployment and create quality jobs in Europe. Did you know that women make up almost two-fifths of the new European Parliament?  This is above the world average for national parliaments (26.9% at the beginning of 2024) and above the European average for national parliaments (31.6%). From a low 16.6% in the first directly elected legislature in 1979, the percentage of female Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) rose continuously after each election, reaching 41% following the 2019 election. While female representation in the European Parliament has more than doubled since the first direct elections in 1979, in 2024 the share of women has decreased slightly.
