Micro-Mobility for Europe

Today, the Clean Cities Campaign (CCC) hosted by Transport & Environment (T&E), Micro-Mobility for Europe (MMfE) and the URBAN Intergroup at the European Parliament are publishing a Joint Letter outlining How Cities Benefit From Micro-Mobility. As it becomes increasingly clear that shared #MicroMobility services play a key role in achieving EU cities’ sustainable transportation goals, the three signatories are calling for a more collaborative and constructive regulatory approach between cities and private operators.   The three signatories emphasise that: 🌍Micro-mobility plays an increasingly important role in achieving cities' sustainable transportation goals and is one solution to cities' persistent challenges like reducing traffic congestion and air and noise pollution 🇪🇺 European cities should adopt a collaborative approach in regulating micro-mobility, through open and constructive dialogue with private operators  💡 Banning shared micro-mobility services runs counter to cities’ stated sustainable transport goals and that there are better ways to ensure these services meet cities' goals while respecting residents and public space. 🚦Cities should prioritise the safety of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and scooters riders by investing in infrastructure that creates safer spaces on streets and reduces space from cars. 🙏 Thanks to Eurocities for having us in the panel discussion about B2G #mobility data sharing. 🛴 🚲 💬 On behalf of Micro-Mobility for Europe, our Co-chair Marc Naether stated that “micro-mobility operators have a lot of data and we recognise that some of this data has a public value. Cities can use this data to shape their mobility policy in a better way. One of the preconditions of data sharing is that the data format needs to be standardised and that solid legal bases exist for sharing.” He added that “we need a good balance between making data available, but at the same time ensuring solid protection of commercially sensitive data. The EU should have a close eye on how the Member States implement the Delegated Regulation on MMTIS in this regard.”

📉 Schwere und tödliche Unfälle mit geteilten E-Scootern und E-Bikes in Europa sinken zum dritten Jahr in Folge! 🚑 Die Zahl der Vorfälle, die eine ärztliche Behandlung erforderten oder zu tödlichen Verletzungen führten, sank im Jahr 2022 bei E-Scootern um 19 % und bei E-Bikes um 16 %. Das zeigen Daten des europäischen Zusammenschlusses der Anbieter von Mikromobilität Micro-Mobility for Europe. Es wurden Zahlen der Anbieter Bird, Bolt, Dott, Lime, TIER Mobility und Voi Technology für mehr als 300 Millionen Fahrten mit E-Scootern und 58 Millionen Fahrten mit E-Bikes ausgewertet. Micromobility injuries requiring medical treatment have dropped for the third year in a row in Europe, a new study has found. Micro-Mobility for Europe – a coalition of shared micromobility providers – aggregated data based on incident reports by Bird, Bolt, Dott, Lime, Tier and Voi for more than 300 million e-scooter journeys and 58 million e-bike rides. The number of incidents requiring medical attention and fatal injuries dropped by 19% from 2022 for e-scooters, and 16% for e-bikes. “The risks associated with e-scooters are often exaggerated when compared to other forms of micromobility… It is crucial to recognise the important role that all forms of micromobility play in transitioning to sustainable transportation. Incident Data for 2023: Shared micro-mobility injuries continue to drop significantly 🦺 Today, Micro-Mobility for Europe released the findings of its aggregated incident data for 2023, based on more than 300 million e-scooter trips and more than 58 million e-bike rides. 🛴🚲 What are the takeaways? 💡 ➡️ Compared to 2022, the number of all reported injuries declined by 44% for e-scooters and by 39% for e-bikes 📉 ➡️ The majority of injuries are due to a fall of the user or in collision with heavier motor vehicles, in line with recent findings of ITF - International Transport Forum, philippe crist and George Yannis 🚗 ITF - International Transport Forum philippe crist George Yannis ➡️ There is a need to continue collaboration among all stakeholders, create separated cycle paths and lowering car speeds 🤝 Our Safety Expert Sebastian Schlebusch concludes: I am very glad to see that the continuous combined efforts of shared micro-mobility operators, vehicle manufacturers and cities are showing positive results regarding the injury risk of shared e-bikes and e-scooters. Still, #MicroMobility riders are vulnerable road users exposed to risks from faster and heavier vehicles, which count for 70% of all fatal and severe accidents in Europe. This requires the continuous focus of regulators, for example by capping speeds for cars in cities to 30 kmh and enforcing this by geofencing technology to cars as well. At the margins of the Informal Transport European Council, the #EuropeanDeclarationOnCycling was signed by Adina Valean, Karima Delli and Georges Gilkinet. 🚲👏 The institutions are thereby calling for: • more investments in infrastructure 🛣️ • improving road safety 🦺 • and supporting multimodality 🚏 Improvements in cycling infrastructure will also benefit #MicroMobility users as they share the same infrastructure and rely on national, regional and local decision-makers to move away from car-centric spatial planning. Promoting investments in cycling infrastructure and acknowledging the role cycling can play for first/last-mile transport and complementing public transport are aspects that also apply to shared micro-mobility. Marc Naether, Co-Chair of Micro-Mobility for Europe stated: "Today is a historic moment that shows that cycling, walking and shared micro-mobility are increasingly receiving the attention of EU policy-makers, as they offer more sustainable and efficient modes of transport and are alternatives to privately-owned cars in urban areas.
