Earlier this year I was invited by the Nautical Institute Belgian Branch to come over to the Antwerp Maritime Academy to have a talk with the students in a MARS debate. We talked about several subjects like how to assist the pilot in the best way you can, integrate with the bridge team and of course we talked about pilot transfer arrangements. The Nautical Institute gladly gave me permission to publish the article from the May edition from their flagship magazine Seaways. The Nautical Institute is a NGO that also has a consultive status at the IMO. Membership to NI is open for everyone with a personal interest in everything that has to do with seafaring. The Maritime Week of Antwerp was beautifully celebrated during the Plug and Play Europe event, organised by the Plug & Play team here in Antwerp. "Innovation through collaboration," this athos was reflected throughout the event, and throughout the presented projects. The Nature Inclusive design of the new energy island, the Princess Elisabeth Island stood out in particular in how the collaboration between somewhat less obvious partners (WWF, Universities, large energy corporates, nautical experts, biologists, and engineers), can result in truly future proof solutions that combine the protection of the environment and the effectiveness of operations. This project, presented by Elia Group, was nominated and won one of the Blauwe Cluster (Blue Cluster) vzw Blue Innovation Awards yesterday. It was also an honour to hear Antoon Van Coillie present the autonomous vessel Zulu Mass -one which we will perhaps soon encounter in our North Sea- and CMB.TECH their hydrogen tug - the world's first tugboat to be powered by combustion engines that burn hydrogen in combination with traditional fuel.
