Predictive Approaches for Safer Urban Environments
About us
Cities need new approaches to planning and managing mobility networks that account for the dynamic and rapidly changing nature of urban traffic environments. Central to this is safety—for all types of road users, gender, age and mobility levels. The EU-funded Predictive Approaches for Safer Urban Environment consortium (known as Project PHOEBE) brings together the inter-disciplinary power of traffic simulation, road safety assessment, human behaviour, mode shift and induced demand modelling and mobility data into a harmonised, prospective assessment framework for road safety. The 3.5-year-long PHOEBE project will apply and refine the framework in real-world scenarios across three pilot cities, Athens (GR), Valencia (ES) and West Midlands (UK). The PHOEBE framework will be available to other European cities, which can use it as a blueprint to understand and evaluate the long-term safety, mode choice and socio-economic impacts of changes before they are made. Disclaimer: EU HorizonEurope-funding is received through the grant agreement No. 101076963. UK participants in Horizon Europe Project PHOEBE are supported by UKRI grant numbers 10038897 (The International Road Assessment Programme – iRAP) and 10056912 (The Floow).

... and PHOEBE is supporting the ambitions of Valencia by enhancing the road safety of active mobility users and VRUs with our pilot! 🤔 We might even meet our community of practice there in the near future 🙊 ℹ All info about our work in Valencia: https://lnkd.in/dV9yjY8V
Valencia, the home of paella, horchata and... the 2024 European Green Capital! 🌿 The city was awarded for its local efforts to transition to a greener, more sustainable future, providing a better quality of life for its residents. Still unsure where to visit this summer? With its achievements in improving the urban environment, tackling pollution and building resilience to climate change, this city clearly deserves its accolades. Frontrunning cities show us how the green transition can be done. We can all learn from them. → https://europa.eu/!mpKDxC 📷© 1-3. Adobe Stock, 4. The Floow are long-established experts focused on risk understanding. We use precise data about mobility to help quantify and manage risk when in motion. Despite this, in a rapidly evolving world, risks also change. So how do we cope? Mobility risk evolves as we continuously adapt where, when, why, & how we move. Changes may involve new vehicles with assistive features or the growing proliferation of electric scooters and e-bikes. It may encompass the increasing adoption of lower speed road networks or wider societal shifts, such as those in our changing urban centres, continue to reshape our patterns, times, places, & reasons for moving. Ultimately, changes introduce potential new variables that help us better understand altered future risk. So, how can we use new data to improve our risk understanding? We continuously review our products, #ListenToClients, #MeasureSuccess, & seek #ContinuousImprovements. Alongside this ongoing work in our #FloowScore product, we also engage in ambitious #ResearchProjects to further understand risk, using new data & processes to consider our product evolution. One such project that helps us explore the evolution of risk is the Phoebe Project. Phoebe Project is a European commission #Horizon project bringing together world leaders in risk understanding. These include iRAP, Aimsun, Delft University of Technology, Technical University of Munich & others. This project aims to help the EU and its Member States pledges to cut road deaths by 50% in the decade to 2030. To help these aims we collectively explore the future of risk with a focus on our changing urban centres. Our work in this project involves #Innovative data & its analysis to gain new insights into risks, both current & future. Within our work, The Floow focuses its research efforts across potential new data sources. We are currently evaluating over 200 data sources that may provide new insights into risk, in testbed work within the UK, Greece, & Spain. These data sources include not only telematics but also AI extracted road feature data, traffic signal timing, traffic simulation model outputs, mode change, induced demand data and compliance monitoring data amongst many other new sources. This collaborative work recently reached an important review by the European Commission in #Brussels. All partners are pleased with our progress & new methodologies for risk calculations using new data. By incorporating new sources of data, we will build an improved understanding of #MobilityRisk. This approach should help predict how shifts in transportation modes, urban changes, & societal behaviours will impact road safety in the years to come. At The Floow, our commitment to innovation in #RiskUnderstanding drives us to continuously adapt & enhance our methodologies. Through projects like PHOEBE, we seek to remain at the forefront of #makingMobilitySmarterAndSaferForAll both today & in the future. #RoadSafety #Innovation #FutureRisk #Risk
