Regenerative agriculture for food system resilience & climate action

About us

Soil Capital is a mission-driven company with long expertise in regenerative agriculture and spearheading the low-carbon transition of farms. It was founded on the core belief that farmers should be rewarded and fairly compensated for their key role in tackling the ecological crisis. Operating internationally, Soil Capital’s ambition is to accompany farmers in the transition of 1 million hectares to more profitable and regenerative agriculture by 2025. In 2019, Soil Capital launched Europe’s first certified carbon payment programme to accelerate the adoption of regenerative practices. It now counts over 1,600 farmers in its ranks, spread across France, Belgium and the UK. We value farmers’ reduced carbon emissions and/or increased soil carbon storage on the carbon voluntary markets through high-integrity certification. Our carbon certification programme unlocks regenerative and resilient food supply chains, by connecting farmers with food & fiber companies committed to rebalancing our agriculture system. We also support companies that want to contribute to support regenerative farming as part of their global net zero initiatives.

[#Podcast!] Ever wondered why that garden-fresh tomato tastes so much better than the grocery store version? 🍅 Spoiler alert: the secret lies in #nutrientdensity and #SoilHealth. In our latest episode of the Deep Seed Podcast, we sit down with Dan Kittredge, the visionary behind the Bionutrient Food Association. Dan’s pioneering work is set to disrupt the food industry by shifting the focus from yield to nutrition. Here are some insights you don’t want to miss: 📊 Shocking Variations - In Dan’s research, some carrots had 40 times more antioxidants than others. That's not a typo – FORTY times! Such massive nutrient variations depend largely on soil health. 🌱 Soil Health Matters - Did you know the only consistent factor correlating with higher nutrient levels in crops is the life teeming in the soil? Not organic certification, not crop variety – just vibrant, living soil! 💡 Innovative Technology - Picture this: You're at the grocery store, deciding between two tomatoes. You pull out your phone, snap a photo, and instantly see the nutritional content of each one. This isn’t science fiction—Dan’s team is pioneering this groundbreaking technology, set to revolutionize the way we shop for food by empowering us with precise nutritional information at our fingertips. 🌾 Economic Incentives: When consumers can discern nutrient-rich food from the rest, economic incentives will naturally push farmers and suppliers to prioritize quality over quantity. This shift could radically transform agricultural practices and improve public health. Dan’s insights offer a fresh, scientifically grounded perspective on the food we eat and the soil it grows in. He passionately argues that “if consumers have the ability to choose what's better off the shelf and leave what's worse, then there will be an economic incentive for the supply chain to focus on nutrition.” 🔗 Listen now to this eye-opening episode! https://hubs.la/Q02K0ggN0 #FoodRevolution #SustainableAgriculture #AgricultureInnovation #FoodTech #BionutrientFood #FarmToTable #SoilScience #NutritionMatters #FutureOfFood #RegenAg

🌾 [Monday #Agronomic #News] As the 2024 #harvest season is still on going, we're facing a challenging year for #agriculture. In France, the harvest of rapeseed and winter barley is nearly complete, while winter wheat harvests continue in northern France and Belgium. Unfortunately, this year mirrors the conditions of 2016, with French winter wheat production expected to fall to around 26-27 million tonnes—more than 27% below the average of previous years (36 M t on average according to AGPB). Key factors contributing to this decline include: ▶ Lower Yields: Estimated at around 6.4-6.5 t/ha. (-11% compared with the ten-year average according to Arvalis), due to excessive rainfall and lack of sunlight at key crop stages. ▶Reduced Acreage: A 7.4% drop in wheat planting due to poor winter weather. Farmers' economic situation remains tense : wheat prices, currenlty under €220/t due to strong global harvests, and rising production costs put pressure on farmers' finances. Despite these challenges, it's a crucial time to emphasize the #sustainability of our farming practices and #soilhealth. By focusing on innovation and financial stability, we can navigate these obstacles and build a resilient future for agriculture. 🌱 Stay informed and stay resilient. #Agriculture #Harvest2024 #Sustainability #Farming #SoilHealth #EconomicOutlook #SoilCapital *The figures in this post are provisional estimates, to be consolidated at the end of the harvest. [#Agronomic #News!] 🌾 Our agronomist Maxime Alaurent is in the fields in Aisne, France, where they were harvesting wheat. It's a perfect time to highlight some key principles of harvest operations in #regenerativesystems. 1️⃣ Traffic Control: The grain bin on the video holds about 21 tonnes of wheat when fully loaded, which is too heavy for the soil to bear with only two axles. Minimise driving on the field to avoid soil compaction, especially since the soil is wet this year. Whenever it is possible, leave the bins outside the field or, if you have to, follow the sprayers passes. Keeping #soilstructure intact ensures smooth gas and water flow, and therefore keeps favorable conditions for both plants and other soil #organisms, avoiding potential subsequent yield losses. 2️⃣ Straw Management: Leave the straw on the soil. In the exemple, the straw might bring about 4 tonnes of dry matter, providing essential carbon and nutrients for the soil microbiology during the tough summer months. 3️⃣ Weed Management: Prevent weed spread by cleaning your machinery before leaving the field. Collecting chaff can reduce weed pressure by more than 50% (Source : Arvalis) by exporting weed seeds out of the fields. https://lnkd.in/gfBaBM45. 4️⃣ #CoverCrops: Sow cover crops immediately after harvesting to benefit from residual moisture. Planting deeper (5 cm) can also help to secure germination and maximise biomass as soon as the rains return. 🌱 Wishing all our farmers a successful and stress-free harvest season! #RegenAg #Harvest2024 #FarmLife #SustainableFarming #WheatHarvest
