The summer Southern Ocean is likely to be a stronger CO2 sink than previously thought. 3300 hours of eddy covariance flux measurements on ships showed differences to past SOCAT based estimates by research ships, sail drones, profiling floats and global ocean biogeochemistry models. Differences can be explained due to considering temperature variations in the upper ocean and a much higher resolution measured. From 13 to 17 October 2025, the 8th International Congress for Underwater Archaeology (IKUWA8), takes place at VLIZ in Oostende (Belgium). Lots of sampling actvities took place in the Living Lab Nieuwpoort of the Interreg North Sea Programme's TREASURE_EU project during the last weeks! Thank you team VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute for the team effort! We sampled microlitter particles in the Yser estuary with a Ferry boc tidal cycle to investigate tidal influences on particle distributions. And tested our in-house made 'macro-net' for floating macrolitter observations. We had very enthusiastic children and well-prepared teachers joining us for a Plastic Pirates sampling day that was led by Line Debaveye. We were trying out the new Plastic Pirates coastal protocol. The children learned to watch-out for litter on a clean-looking beach, finding lots of plastic ropes and strings entangled in seaweeds in the intertidal zone - cigarette butts, fragments from bottle lids and styrofoam in upper beach zones. We also sampled riverbank macro- and mesolitter using a transect and quadrat method respectively, finding lots of stranded litter even on the third day within a week. We will be now using the joint-list for litter classifications.

VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute has collected field recordings of the underwater sound within an operational offshore wind farm in the framework of DEMASK project.
