Empowering communities and change agents to redesign their relationship with resources: nothing and no one is disposable

About us

Zero Waste Europe was created to empower communities to rethink their relationship with resources. In a growing number of regions, local groups of individuals, businesses and city officials are taking significant steps towards eliminating waste in our society. We work towards a world where nothing and no one is disposable! Zero Waste Europe engages at two levels: • Supporting local groups with independent knowledge and streamlined tools to drive change more efficiently, • Structuring the movement internationally to better represent the interests of our communities at the EU level and engage policy makers with a unified voice. In these regards, Zero Waste Europe operates both as a knowledge network and as an advocacy group, representing active communities in 28 countries.

🌍 What Europe do we want? The choice is clear for us: the Europe we want is a zero waste one! But how does a zero waste Europe improve citizens' day-to-day lives? 🌿 What benefits can #organic waste recycling bring? This Brazilian case shows its positive impact on society. The "Brazil Compost and Grow" initiative included training local governments, businesses, waste pickers, and community leaders to develop local projects 👥🏢 Pólis' study found that #composting with recyclers generates: 🌱 Around 19 jobs (10 to 28) for every 10,000 tonnes treated, compared to 10 jobs in private composting 🌟 Around 11 times more jobs than landfills and incinerators 💰 Recycler-led systems were found to be cheaper than traditional methods like #landfill and incineration, making them the most viable option for ending landfills in Brazil Change is possible! Important political decisions are normally taken during holiday season when citizens are not paying attention😏 Coming back to work something that jumped at me is the fact that the European Commission has launched an infringement procedure on ALL EU Member States for failing to meet #wastecollection and #recycling targets. Based on the latest available data reported, all have failed to meet several waste collection and recycling targets laid down under the current EU waste legislation. Good laws are good but if they are not implemented they are not worth the paper they are written on. Ideas how to step up enforcement in the EU, anyone? #circulareconomy https://lnkd.in/e_xQD-mj

🌿 We often talk about sorting #biowaste, but how can we prevent this waste from being produced in the first place? In 2023, Ekologi brez meja / Ecologists Without Borders Association (EBM) carried out the second phase of a pilot project aimed at reducing food waste in Slovenia in collaboration with the municipality of Škofja Loka. This initiative focused on three key stakeholders in the local environment: public institutions, economic entities, and households. The project aimed at identifying the causes of significant #foodwaste and finding ways to reduce it. Measurements were repeated in two participating public institutions, showing effective measures: one institution reduced food waste by 21%, while the other achieved a 10% reduction. Interestingly, the rural municipality of Jezersko – unlike most other places in Slovenia – does not have door-to-door waste collection. Residents must bring their waste to a proper collection centre, which offers extensive separation options. Contrary to expectations, this approach led to exceptional results, demonstrating the effectiveness of this unique rural waste management strategy. Check out the comments to learn more from other successful, local measures 💚 #ForkToFarm #MethaneMatters
