The course examines the energy options available to us as we seek to diversify energy supply while curtailing demand in the coming years. While focus is placed on the technical aspects of the energy question, the political and economic implications of the various energy options are also discussed. The course provided my with a holistic understanding of how we can tackle one of the great challenges of the 21st century: providing sustainable energy.

Focus was placed on good quantitative and qualitative of the engineering problems seen in the energy industry. Assessment was undertaken in the form of examinations along with group and individual project work. I enjoyed the challenge of all method of assessment, however, I found those projects which involved group work to be particularly enjoyable. I achieved First Class Honours grades in all group projects during undergraduate study.

    SHARE Cork

    - 1 month

    Poverty Alleviation

SHARE is a student run charity in my home town of Cork, Ireland. The charity aims to improve living condition for the elderly community within the city, particularly for those who have fallen into poverty and who do not have a proper family support network to care for them in their old age. I was one of two entrusted with the counting of all moneys collected during the annual Christmas collection campaign. My role also involved on street collection on money when not involved in the count.

  • MPhil Thesis - An Analysis of Ground Source Heat Pump Systems with Heat Recovery

    -

My masters thesis project involved working in collaboration with Geothermal International to analyse their unique heat pump system at a Sainsburys store in Carlisle, United Kingdom. A mathematical model was used to produce some very significant findings, quantifying the benefits of such unique systems over conventional systems. Analytical and communicative skills proved essential throughout the process. I have been asked to co-author a journal paper based on the findings of my…

  • Final Year Thesis - Optimisation of Electric Vehicle Charging Using Economic Model Predictive Control

    -

My final year project (thesis) involved the use of Matlab/Simulink in solving a cost optimisation problem for Electric Vehicle charging. The model developed used electricity market data (electricity cost at 30 minute intervals), typical driver patterns and a battery model in finding an optimal charging solution. The solution ensures the battery is sufficiently charged according to the drivers predicted driving pattern at minimal cost. Computational methods, algorithmic development and data…

The model developed used electricity market data (electricity cost at 30 minute intervals), typical driver patterns and a battery model in finding an optimal charging solution. The solution ensures the battery is sufficiently charged according to the drivers predicted driving pattern at minimal cost. Computational methods, algorithmic development and data manipulation were central to the completion of the project. The project was undertaken in pairs and therefore teamwork was central to its successful completion.

Working in a group of five we drafted a fantasy tender adhering to a strict deadline. To expand our knowledge of the engineering design particular to our project, I initiated a meeting with ARUP in Cork to discuss a similar tender. We pitched our fantasy construction tender to prospective clients.
