About

My research interests remain related to wave interactions with sea dikes on shallow foreshores, with a focus on increasing understanding of the influence of infragravity waves. Methods include both numerical and physical modelling, but my main focus now is on field measurements of wave transformations, wave overtopping and wave impact using an innovative artificial dike concept at the Living Lab Raversijde site (Ostend, Belgium).

My PhD research was part of the fundamental strategic research project ‘‘CREST ‐ Climate REsilient coaST: wave action in a changing climate: effects on the dynamics of the coast and implications for future safety strategies’’, funded by the Flemish Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology (part of VLAIO, Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship).
The main objective of the CREST project was to gain a better understanding of the nearshore and onshore physical processes, flood risks and to determine the resilience of the coastal system, in order to deal in the most appropriate way with the possible impact of climate change.
My research in particular focussed on developing and applying advanced numerical models (e.g. OpenFOAM), together with carrying out supporting physical model tests and field measurements, to establish a prediction methodology for wave overtopping, wave impact forces on sea defences, and risk of casualties in buildings on sea dikes. These developments were for the specific case of a very shallow foreshore (but widely applicable), typical for the Belgian coast which is mostly fronted by a hybrid beach-dike sea defence system.
