Chasing Harlow

What started as a bet can only end in heartache.

Moving to the middle of nowhere right before my senior year wasn’t ideal.
Then again, neither was my brother dying.
The move was supposed to be a fresh start.
A new town, a new school, a new mindset.
Too bad my past indiscretions followed me.
Enter Jace Rivera, the literal boy next door.
Jace is loved by the town. Admired by his peers. Worshipped by his teammates.
On the basketball court, he’s a god amongst men.
Off the court, he’s… nothing at all like I expected.
He’s profound and pure and… devastatingly tortured.
Yet somehow, he offers me light while I offer him hope.
In the end, we’ll either hurt or heal each other.
There’s no in between.
“Pain is the price we pay for love,” he once told me.
And a broken heart is the consequence of it.

"He smiles.
And it’s in this moment that I fall.
Hard.
Deep.
In the company of darkness, Jace Rivera becomes my light."

It seems like every time I finish a Jay McLean book I think… this one is my favorite. They are all that good. I don’t think there is an author out there that consistently makes me fall in love with their characters and writing like she does. I laughed, I cried, and I loved every single moment of Chasing Harlow.

Earlier this year I read the novella ‘In the Company of Darkness’ where we met Harlow and Jace. I was addicted and wanted to learn more about them so I was thrilled when I started Chasing Harlow. Harlow and Jace are both high school seniors. Harlow is starting at a new school after living through a tragedy and moving.

Jace is the star basketball player at his school and a hometown hero, but he’s not your typical hot shot athlete. He’s reserved and keeps to himself. His homelife isn’t the best and neither is Harlows. They end up being neighbors, coworkers, and with time they become each other's everything.

Sigh. There is nothing like reading about first loves. Though this love wasn’t always easy or simple, it was beautiful and pure. The last 20% of the book I cried so much, but in the best way possible. They weren’t necessarily sad tears, I was just overwhelmed with my feelings and y’all know I love to feel in books.

Not only did I love Jace and Harlow, but Jonah was extra special and Harlow’s dad was amazing. There were so many great side characters and the found-family was so special. This book was perfect for me and I couldn’t have loved it more. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up. It’s incredible!

'𝐂H𝐀S𝐈N𝐆 𝐇A𝐑L𝐎W' Is a full length romance book by Jay Mclean. Spoken in 'dual perspectives.' Jace and Harlow

All the stars to affinity and back..Feel like your tear ducts need a cleansing well then here’s the perfect book for you, this had me sobbing, some parts just broke me to smithereens. 🤧

This book was one I’d been anticipating after reading previous chapters within an anthology, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. The waiting just ramped up those anticipation levels more. And as soon as it went live, I dived in.

I swooned
I laughed
I cried
I got hit in the feels

Harlow: Seventeen year old has moved from Dallas to a hick town in Rowville due to her mother's transfer as a nurse, the town is so small that if you blink you miss it sort of thing, this is the type of new beginning Harlow is after so soon after losing her big brother and a separate scandal she wants to leave behind.

New home
New town
New school

Jace: lives on the property right next door to his new neighbour Harlow, what used to be the place he lived, but that was then, this is now. Even though Jace has lived here his whole life and the township worship him, he hasn't got any attachments, (or so he thinks) he's the epitome of a 'lonely boy' he sticks to himself, plays and breathes basketball, works, goes home and takes care of his grandfather, rinse and repeat, but delve deeper and this boy will destroy your heart with his story.

Both are hiding behind grief and wear it like a shield to keep others away. But neither factor on the other, they lean on each other without even realising it.

This is the Jay McLean I fell in love with all those years ago, like a sponge I absorbed all the words, inhaling this book like I was possessed never wanting it to end. I am so happy she’s back sharing her words with the world again. 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

DNF @ 85%

I’m so pissed off😭😭😭😭 this book was so fucking good and cute until the third act break up. During this break up, it seems as if he literally doesn’t give a shit about her anymore in his POV’s. THEN HE KISSES ANOTHER GIRL AND ALMOST SLEEPS WITH HER!!!!! AND SHE SEES IT HAPPENING !!!! This is the girl he lost his virginity to btw🥰 I’m literally so fucking pissed off because this book just wasted my time. I was thinking surely, it was a misunderstanding, but no. My blood is boiling😑 and when this girl first showed up, he literally ignored the h and was smiling all happy about this other girl. In front of the h.

I’m telling you the book did a complete one fucking eighty after the 60% mark. They were planning their future together and everything, and then they break up, knowing she’s going through a tough time he proceeds to not give a single fuck about her and he tries to sleeps with someone else. And it’s even worse knowing he did that when he made him and the h wait to sleep together because he “wanted it to mean something”

“Are you and Reyna?” His eyes shift to mine, eyebrows raised in question. “I saw you and her in your bedroom… from my window…” Unease crawls up my spine, making me shift in my spot. “I saw you kiss her.” “Sorry,” he murmurs, and he can’t look at me anymore.

When he sees the ow again 😋🥰:

“Reyna…” Jace whispers, and I face him just in time to see the relief on his face. The comfort in his eyes. His shoulders drop as she falls into his embrace, holding her tight. “What are you doing here?” “My mom called, said you were going through something, so I wanted to be here for you.” Jace smiles at her—a mixture of joy and longing, and he doesn’t let her go, not even when Jonah says, motioning toward me, “Reyna, this is Harlow.” Reyna turns toward me, her smile slipping. “Hi,” she says, her arms still around Jace’s waist and his around her neck. They fit together perfectly, like two lost pieces of a puzzle made only for each other.

When the poor boy is just trying to get over the h 😞☹️poor guy:

I stare at his bedroom window, waiting, hoping it remains as dark in there as it feels in my soul, but… it’s only seconds later that the room illuminates, and I choke on a breath as two figures appear, stopping right in front of the window. I plead with myself to look away, to close my eyes… but I can’t. Not even when he reaches up, moves her hair behind her ear(his signature move with the h btw 😍). Not even when she flattens her palms on his chest, tilting her head up. Not even when he lowers his mouth to hers, kisses her the way he used to kiss me. Tears fill my eyes faster than I’m ready for them, and I finally look away when she helps him remove his shirt.

Ruined my fucking mood. And I’m rating this because I went back and skimmed the rest, but it was entirely ruined by Jace.

“He takes my hand in his, linking our fingers and, without a word, he guides me back into the gym. And it feels different somehow, with Jace beside me, leading the way. Like a light in my darkness. A calm to my storm.”

Jay McLean you mother😭😭 words can’t express how much I loved this book and how much I loved EVERYTHING about it!

Jace and Harlow were everything I wanted it to be and they’re no doubt my top jaymclean couple after avaconnor.

I loved the dynamics between jace and Harlow, jace and Harlow with their friends and special mention of relationship of jace with Harlow’s dad🥹

this book made me tear up twice or thrice cause it was so perfect! this is no doubt the best book I’ve read so far this year!

Jay, you’re a fantastic writer and this book was nothing but magical! I can’t wait for more😭🩵

what a fabulous way to come back! i have absolutely, totally loved Jay's last two books, they were phenomenal✨✨ Jay McLean is by far one of my favorite authors and Chasing Harlow proves once again that her writing is truly magical. she captures you from the first word and has you glued to the pages until the very end. filled with heartbreak, love, hope, friendship, hilarious moments, and characters you're bound to forever hold close to your heart— you'll remember her words long after the book is over.

Jace and Harlow are two shattered souls who together are whole. i won't go into more because of spoilers, but the traumatic and tragic experiences these two characters have gone through... makes you wonder how someone could go through and continue to endure what they have been dealt with. it's such a relief that those experiences brought them together and their love for each other helped fill in the gaps so they could both heal. Jace and Harlow's journey to a happy ending is heavy and angsty and thoroughly gutted me but their story couldn't have been told any more perfectly. this book deserves more than five stars, and i will for sure be rereading it often. 💙🩶🤍

“He smiles. And it's in this moment that I fall. Hard. Deep. In the company of darkness, Jace Rivera becomes my light.”

“Everything changed after that day. Everything. Harlow became my everlasting hope. My light at the end of the darkness.”

“You and me— we're just victims of loving the right people through the wrong times, all with the hope that there's light at the end of the darkness. You've been my hope at the end of the darkness, Harlow.. and if we're going to survive this, then I need you to be light.”

There is something to be said about Jay McLean's writing that I can't capture properly with the right words.
I can laugh and cry and bite the shit out of my nails to get through her stories and enjoy the heck out of it.
I can absolutely HATE one of the main characters... looking at you, Harlow... and still love the story SO. MUCH!

For me, Chasing Harlow was all about Jace. He was this young man on the verge of greatness and his life was a mess. He was a mess. And he had this great support network he had no idea how to use. These people were basically throwing themselves at him, wanting to help, and he was blind to it until it was almost too late.

The author captures such strong emotions with her characters. These broken, bruised, incredible characters.

Can I just say that I freaking loved Jonah so much? He was the friend that Jace deserved.

***5 "Faith over fear!!!" stars***

"In the company of darkness, Jace Rivera becomes my light."

We have taken a delicious bite from Jace and Harlow in 'Hit me with your best shot' anthology, but these two young people had so much more to say and show us!!!
Their story was full of trauma, love, intensity... It was a very emotional ride which had the ability to break your heart!!!
I loved Jace and Harlow so much!!! Their relationship was so pure and tender... They were each other's light in the darkness and together they could do anything, but they had a long road ahead of them...

"Pain is the price we pay for love..."

A new town, a new school, a new era is starting for Harlow after her brother's abrupt death!!!
Her scars are still bleeding and the present condition of her family is at the edge of breakdown!!!
Jace is the town's golden boy... The basketball star...
But Jace is fighting his own demons... With a hunting past, he is trying to survive his present until he can leave this town behind forever...
Jace and Harlow won't fall instantly in love... They will agree to a bet first, but then... everything will change for both of them...

"You're messing with my head, Jace."
"Trust me, the feeling's mutual."

I loved Jace and Harlow very much!!! Especially Jace had sneak inside my heart so easily... His pain was so palpable, his heartbreak was all consuming... My heart was hurting for this boy!!! And then this new girl came into his life and everything changed... His life became lighter even though the darkness was always lurking from the sidelines...
Harlow was also a very heartbroken girl that couldn't heal even if she wanted to... There was toxicity around her that was slowing her down and erasing her progress... Jace had put balm to her soul, but the scars were keep bleeding over and over again and that was coming in between them!!!

"You and me- we're just victims of loving the right people through the wrong times, all with the hope that there's light at the end of the darkness."

This was a very emotional story about love and healing...
Jace and Harlow were tragic figures, and they have stolen my heart...
But there were other characters in here that had stolen my heart, as well!!! People that I won't mention, except from two...
Harlow's dad was such an amazing man and the connection he had with Jace was something wonderful!!! And Jonah!!! He was a best friend material and he was such a good young man!!!
Yes, I fell in love with this story and this crew... They were incredible, even though they had brought many tears in my eyes!!! Jay McLean is an amazing storyteller!!!

"You've been my hope at the end of darkness, Harlow... and if we're going to survive this, then I need you to be light."

Third act break up involves H cheating with OW. And the reader is gaslit and it’s glossed over. Seems this is a common theme with this author and no trigger warnings of betrayal or cheating. When we have to deal with this type of thing in real life, why romanticize it in a book that’s a form of escapism? No thanks.

5 heartwrenching stars

Jay McLean owns my heart once again with this stunningly emotional YA romance! This book had me feeling in all the best ways; I laughed, I cried, I ached, and I fell in love with these amazing characters. Their story is beautifully written and full of feels, and this is a fave for 2024.

The beginning of this story was part of the Hit Me With Your Best Shot Anthology, which released in March 2024. Then titled In the Company of Darkness, that small taste had me absolutely hooked and desperate for more, so I was beyond excited to finally get my hands on this book and dive in to Harlow and Jace’s story.

Harlow and her parents have moved to a remote small town following a devastating family tragedy. They are looking for a fresh start, and Harlow will be entering her senior year of high school. Jace Rivera lives in the property next door to Harlow. Quiet and reserved, he’s dealing with his own family trauma, but he focusses his life on basketball. He’s a star player, and the home-town hero with a bright future ahead of him, he just needs to make it through his senior year.

Harlow and Jace’s home lives are difficult. They are tortured souls struggling with grief, trauma and somewhat messed-up situations, but they’re trying to make the best of things. Their first meetings don’t go well, but when Harlow proposes a mutually beneficial fake relationship, things start to change.

“Maybe a little later down the road, you and me… we can mean something… to each other.”

They slowly start to open to each other, they develop a friendship, and then more, and slowly, naturally, and oh-so-beautifully, they fall in pure, intense, soul-deep love. In the most beautiful love story, they become each other’s whole worlds, the light in the dark, and I was completely swept up in the wonder and beauty of all that they feel for each other.

Before I am ready, he pulls away, struggling for air, and asks, “Are we still faking it?”
My lips a whisper from his, I shake my head.
He
smiles.
And it’s in this moment that I fall.
Hard.
Deep.
In the company of darkness, Jace Rivera becomes my light.

But life hasn’t been kind to these two, and they have some major challenges to face. Though they support each other unquestionably, they have a heartbreakingly difficult road, and I ached for them both. I cried through chapters of this book, feeling so much for them and wanting better for both of them. It’s just not fair. But watching them push through and find their way forward is a beautiful journey. They confront their issues head on, they grow and change, and it’s a necessary part of their healing both as individuals, and together. And though it hurt, I loved watching them come through it all.

“I love the way you see me.”
“I wish you could see yourself through my eyes.” I lean forward, press my lips to hers, keep them there when I add, “You make loving you so easy.”

There’s a phenomenal bunch of friends and family who have their backs through it all, and I loved that they had so many people around them who loved and supported them, and that they were able to lean on. Harlow’s Dad is awesome, Jonah is adorable, and the extended found-family group contribute a lot to the story.

Jay McLean writes the most amazing YA romance. The voice she brings to her stories is so real, and she’s written an amazing story for Jace and Harlow. This book is beautifully written, it made me feel everything, and it’s an amazing read.

I love this one so much – 5 stars!

I have two words to describe Jay’s latest book Chasing Harlow; heartbreakingly beautiful. There is a feeling of raw emotion throughout the book that were so intense, but underneath all the dark feelings was a resounding feeling of love that runs throughout the book.

One of the reasons I always fall deeply in love with Jay’s books is that she always writes about love, with love. No matter what the MC’s go through. She write’s honestly, about how hard love can be, and the different ways we feel love or receive love.

Also the way she portrays peoples addictions is so fucking pure. People are still who they once were before their addictions took hold. She did it in Logan and she did it here, and there is always a reason behind their addictions and I think as humans, we need to help those that have addictions understand it. I love that she writes the issues deeply and not just for the sake of making a character “bad”.

So this one is about Jace & Harlow and their journey to that happy ever after love that we all want to find. They are both dealing with various tragedies in life, with barely any emotional support from the people that surround them. When they end up being each others light in the dark, it’s an emotional ride to the finish line! And I couldn’t get enough.

The characters, as always, are what drive this book. Apart from Jace and Harlow, we meet Sammy (who is a riot!), Jeannie and Jonah, who is hands down my favourite side character Jay has ever written. He’s just begging for his own story to be told.

But what stood out most for me is Jace’s character. He has tendencies to his personality that are clear without making him “stupid” or “ignorant” and his loving nature throughout everything he endured was beautiful. Even the glimpses of his humour were perfect, and rare and gave such an understanding of who he is. But the importance of writing him that way was also clear; those things did not define him. He is who he is above everything else.

This book as with all her other books, will become part of my Roman Empire, which is why I love the things Jay writes. They’re not just a romance book, they have all hold a message, ones they are so powerful and resonate. Ones that make you think about the people that surround you and how each and every one of them is dealing with something. And how at the end of the day, we should all just show them love in some way.

Favourite Quote:

“Look at Penelope. She just watched me rail you into oblivion.”

To Sum It Up:

At this point let’s face it, I may as well just be a fan page for all things Jay McLean. She legitimately gives me all the feels with her books, and each one gets better and better.

“If we’re going to survive this, I need you to be my light.”

I’m just a girl sitting here with tears streaming down my face, riding an emotional high, as I revel in a romance that rendered me awestruck. I fell head-over-heels in love with this journey of heartbreak and healing. Chasing Harlow stole my breath, heart, and tears. Intense. Intoxicating. Everything.

A moving new adult meets high school basketball romance, Chasing Harlow stars Jace and Harlow who are thrust together by fate and a shared bond. From the moment I sank myself into the pages, I was transported to small town Texas as I became a part of this romance. Drawn together like a moth to a flame, Harlow and Jace are two shattered souls who together are whole. Author Jay McLean has given one genuine and gut-wrenching but gorgeous voice to a teen hero and heroine, who, together, find light in the dark. I felt these characters—their pain yet promise—as though they were real.

“I’d walk through fire for you.”

Chasing Harlow was the storm I never saw coming. A deep and devastatingly beautiful book that sank into my soul—thrusting my emotions on edge—as its pendulum-like push and pull annihilated me. I was blown away! My heart shattered and soared for this hero, heroine, and their hard fought happily ever after. This is the kind of love story I fall for … live for … and I’m aching for more.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ but worth all the stars and all the moons

It's not a surprise to say I loved a Jay McLean book. I have read all of her books and sometimes twice! I missed having pages of her words and getting caught up in her stories, and then Chasing Harlow dropped, and it is so special. The writing is everything! This author has a unique vibe that pulls her readers in, and she blows you away with intricate and magical storytelling. From start to finish, her craft is special, and she fills pages with flawed yet relatable characters. It isn't easy to find this same vibe from other books which is why when she delivers a new book, whether in a few months or a few years...I stop and clear my schedule to settle in. Jay McLean makes me remember why I love to read. I remember how good writing can make you forget everything around you so that you can get lost in the words. This is what Jay McLean does. Harlow and Jace will just consume your thoughts. They will make you hold your breath. They will make you smile, and they will definitely make you cry. Just when you think you can't read any more words, she delivers an epic romance that is so real and raw. I hope she never doubts her ability to deliver to her readers as this one hits, BIG!

No idea how the author does it, but so far every book of hers I've read has been immaculate and memorable!🙌😍

This YA romance deals with trauma, mental conditions, growth, finding your person, and so much more. I've read this in one sitting and couldn't put it down! 😅🆘

Please don't read it for smut though, there's only one scene and one fade-to-black, but honestly, their relationship was so precious and powerful, I'm glad it was written the way it was.

On a side note: did you also notice that sometimes YA romances are much healthier, more honest, and genuine than NA or adult romances? What's up with that?🤷🏼‍♀️

“I wish he would kiss me, just to show me he feels it too—this visceral need to be near him.”

Chasing Harlow absolutely blew me away. It was an emotional rollercoaster of first love and moving into adulthood after dealing with your own losses in life. Oh and also having to deal with your examples of adults dealing with their own “stuff” that trickles down to you. Harlow and Jace’s story is sweet and funny, but it also has its heavy and emotional moments as well. I loved that these two found a comfort and safe space in each other, but also had things to heal and grow from on their own. Their story isn’t easy, but it’s heartbreaking and warming at the same time. If you’re looking for an emotional young love/life story, then Chasing Harlow is absolutely one to pick up.

TW/CW (warnings will contain plot spoilers): abuse of power by sports coach, death of parents, abuse from guardian, verbal abuse/abandonment from parent, self harm, discussions of alcohol/drug abuse, family member struggling with dementia, (there may be more forgetting 😅)

This was really cute, I wasn't expecting such an emotional story but I actually really loved it. This had all the angst we're used to in Jay McLean's books. I really loved the relationship between Jace & Harlow's dad, they had a sweet bond. The whole small town was an unexpected surprise and I loved how supportive these characters were. Things got a little messy in the 3rd part of the book with a lot going on all of a sudden but the author handled it well.

𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: ☆☆☆☆☆ 5/5

Jay McLean is, and will always be, one of my favourite authors. Not because she just proved it again. It's because her books feel like coming home. It's hard to describe that feeling, just knowing that you are safe, that you can trust the journey she will take you on even when it shatters you along the way... I know, my heart will be safe, and the pieces back together in the end. I've been reading her books for the last 10 years, and to be able to read more of her words so soon after her last release makes me incredibly happy. I hope she never stops writing, even if it is only for herself. Chasing Harlow is a beautiful story of two characters finding themselves and each other. Don't go in expecting heavy/spicy romance, because honestly it's not there and completely unnecessary for this story. It's beautiful the way it is and, in my opinion, only stronger because of how it is written. Now STOP wasting your time on reading reviews and START reading Chasing Harlow.

Jay McLean's Chasing Harlow is a touching and intense story about love, pain, and healing. Harlow moves to a new town after her brother's death, hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she meets Jace Rivera, the popular basketball star next door, who is dealing with his own heavy issues.

McLean excels at creating characters that feel real and relatable. Harlow’s journey involves a lot of self-sabotage, making some decisions that can be frustrating but also understandable. Jace, despite being the town's Golden Boy, is surprisingly deep and vulnerable.

"He smiles. And it’s in this moment that I fall. Hard. Deep. In the company of darkness, Jace Rivera becomes my light."

The connection between Harlow and Jace is strong, filled with both angst and tender moments as they help each other through their traumas. McLean balances their romance with emotional intensity, making the story both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

This book is packed with emotion, and there were times I found myself tearing up alongside the characters. Harlow’s choices might be questionable, but they make sense given her pain and need for self-protection, adding depth to her character.

"You and me—we’re just victims of loving the right people through the wrong times, all with the hope that there’s light at the end of the darkness."

Overall, Chasing Harlow is a beautifully written, emotionally charged story about young love and resilience. Jay McLean’s knack for creating relatable characters and delivering an emotional punch makes this book a must-read.

Good. Just 100 pages give it take too long. Life is redundant. I don’t wanna read pages of someone’s day to day that doesn’t move the story along.

I think I’m done for now with this author, maybe it was just a one time hit for me, but the rest of her books I have struggled with.
Anyways this starts as a slow burn with Jace and Harlow but I felt like the switch to lovers came out of nowhere, like next chapter they were kissing and doing stuff together. I hated how the author broke them up and then reunited them again, like this book was so messy and not in a good way.

If you haven’t read a Jay McLean book yet this is your sign to do so now. Her writing is amazing and the emotions I felt while reading this story from sad tears to laughter had me fully immersed and wanting more
Coming of age, Unique characters, family dynamics, angst, First love, small town and basketball. Love the main characters-Jace and Harlow and the side characters. All so layered and purposeful.

"It feels like everything all at once.
Like pride mixed with pain and coated with punishment."

Dual POV. Sports Romance. new adult.

*I received an ARC review copy in exchange for my spoiler-free, honest opinion*
While I am certainly not composed-nor have I honestly processed this book fully-I couldn’t wait another second to get my thoughts out.
Would it really be a new JMac release if I didn’t start it off by letting y’all know how she completely obliterated my heart???? Because it’s true. And I loved every single second.
Jay has talked about how this book was one that just came naturally to her, that truly brought her back into her love of writing. This is beyond evident when reading Chasing Harlow. I felt so strongly that this story needed to be told. This story that just flowed so freely, and was just so pure in heart and life’s complexities.
This book just made me feel so much. I was sick to my stomach one minute, angry out of my mind the next, and then giggling and kicking my feet over the cutest moments. Through it all, I found comfort in this little Texas town (and um YEEHAW, she did that for me, I just know it 😏). Rowville held such a heaviness to it in the beginning, brought on by traumatic past events, people stuck in place, and an honest-to-God gossiping addiction. Honestly par for the course 🤣 HOWEVER!! The moment Harlow Greene moves to town there is an instant shift that can be felt, like you just know nothing will ever be the same.
Jace and Harlow are harboring such heavy grief and trauma in their own ways, but they find a light within each other that is unmatched. I love their growth throughout the novel. And oh, the tears I cried for them. Jay, I WILL BE SENDING OVER MY THERAPY BILL TO YOU ASAP!!!
Just know that you are getting such a one-and-a-lifetime story with this one. It is so beyond special 🫶🏻
Finally, I just want to mention some of my favorite things:
✨ They’re neighbors
✨ Sports Romance 🏀
✨ Fake Dating
✨ Community/Found Family
✨ Healing from Trauma
✨ Hilarious and Heartbreaking Small Town Moments
✨ TRUE LOVE
✨ TEXASSSSSS 🤠
I also need to say I want to marry Harlow’s dad, I freaking love Jonah. Those men, they truly never give up on the ones they love and they are constant support for Harlow and Jace. And LASTLY!! (for real) You will cry a bucket of tears. But it will all be worth it in the end.

A million stars 🥹

Can I just say how happy I am that Jay is back. I’ve missed how captivating her books are and every time I get so emotionally invested in her characters. This book was no different. I read this in the anthology “hit me with your best shot” a few months ago and could not wait to read their full story.

Harlow and her family move into the house next door to Jace in hopes of having a new beginning. Her family is grieving a loss and it’s one that has hit Harlow really hard but she does her best to hide how much it has affected her. But really it’s tearing her up inside. As Harlow is fighting her inner demons, Jace is also trying to survive in his home. These two have both been through so much my heart was breaking for them both. They get close because of a bet that Jace hears about that involves Harlow. From there they just form a bond that is unbreakable. Their story is a rocky rollercoaster because although they realize they heal one another they’re still not perfect. They are still dealing with their personal problems and they don’t want it to affect the other.

This book made me an emotional wreck. I lost count on how many times I cried 😅 but you will also laugh because Jay always balances it out. I loved Sammy, Jeannie, and Jonah such amazing side characters 🫶🏻 kind of want a book on Sammy and Jonah haha. It warmed my heart when Jace started repairing his friendship with Jonah. Also can I just say I related to Jace so much when he was in social settings. Him being the basketball superstar of the school but also being a loner gamer boy just made me love him even more. He didn’t care what others thought and was just always in his own world when he’s in a room full of people. These two just fit so well together and I’m so happy they got their happy ending. I could not put this book down because I needed to see them happy 🥲 they were each others light in the darkness, excuse me while I cry again 😭

I need everyone to read this and fall in love with Jace and Harlow 🤍

If anyone knows how to write angsty YA romance it's Jay McLean! This woman knows her stuff! She gets into these characters and creates these lives, moments & angst so beautifully you can't help but get absorbed into it all.

Not just her main characters, her side ones too are so loveable to the point you'd enjoy reading their own story too. My favorite side character's were Jonah & Harlow's dad

I absolutely adored Jace so much he was such a sweetheart. Jace & Harlow being the light to each other's darkness was amazing and heartwarming! I love that trope so much and author executed it all so well. Their relationship came for my heart and made me feel lonely too lmao. The miscommunication part was the only thing I didn't like.

Jonah was the comedic relief in this story and it was such a pleasure to have him in this book also Harlow's dad was a real one.

Definitely recommend especially if you're looking for an author that does great angt filled teen romances with some spice & ofc a HEA.

When I discovered Jay was releasing a full length book for Jace and Harlow I could not wait to find out more about them after the tease we got previously. I can always guarantee that this author's words will always heal my heart but only after setting me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

The way Jace and Harlow are written makes them characters that get under your skin. They are both vulnerable but with an underlying strength that defies their age. Every interaction felt believable, from their awkward first kiss to the friendship that builds into so much more. I love the secondary characters who provide everything from much needed humour to the support only a friend can give. The moments of reconnecting between Jonah and Jace had me a sobbing mess. Harlow's dad was flawed, sure but he redeemed himself so beautifully and he became the right man at the right time for Jace. There is nothing I would change about this story it is perfect in every way. Harlow and Jace are one of my favourite couples that the author has written.

I cannot begin to express the happiness I felt when I finished this book, my heart was full of joy, hope and love. Never stop writing Jay because your words will be missed.
