Manchester City at the Euros: Who’s On Their Way To Germany?

A Look at the Blues Stars Hoping to Make an Impression in Europe

It’s less than one week until the Euros, which means that we don’t have much longer to wait for football to return. From there, it’s just a few weeks until the Premier League returns, so at least that’s something to keep us occupied.

We’ve already heard that Jack Grealish hasn’t been included in the England squad that is looking to go one better in the Euros this time around, but Manchester City still have a large contingency of players that will be heading to Germany over the summer.

Here’s the lowdown on the stars that are heading to the continent, looking for international glory with their countries.

England

Despite Grealish’s absence, City will still be represented, with Kyle Walker and John Stones expected to take their positions in defence, while Phil Foden is ready to help fire the Three Lions to Euros Glory.

England lost the final in 2021 on penalties (of course) to Italy and will be facing Serbia, Slovenia and Denmark in the group stage.

Belgium

No Belgian team is complete with Kevin de Bruyne and he will feature heavily for the national side in what is likely to be his last European Championship. The City man is rumoured to be leaving the Etihad this summer and, if he does leave, he’ll want to start his new challenge on a high. Joining him in Germany will be winger Jeremy Doku, who has made a big impression already in his first season in Manchester and hopes are high that he’ll be a regular starter for the Blues next season.

Belgium face Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine in the group stages.

Portugal

City have two representatives at the Euros from Portugal, with Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias selected for the national side. Silva in particular has had another excellent season, while Dias has found himself in and out of the side. A mention can go to Joao Cancelo, who is also in the Portugal side in Germany. The City man is still on loan at Barcelona and a good performance from him for the national side could see him move permanently from the club.

If they are to progress, Portugal must navigate past Turkey, Georgia and the Czech Republic.

Croatia

City signed to Croatians last summer in the form of Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol and both were pivotal in City’s pursuit of silverware last season. Kovacic arrived from Chelsea and slotted into the midfield like he’d been there for years, while Gvardiol took a little time to settle. However, the defender weighed in with some crucial, and sometimes stunning goals as City pushed Real Madrid in the Champions League and secured a fourth Premier League title in succession.

Both will face City’s Rodri in the group stage as Croatia were drawn against Spain, Italy and Albania in the group of death.

Switzerland

Manuel Akanji is City’s representative for Switzerland. After another impressive season at the Etihad Stadium, Akanji will be hoping his defensive qualities will be key to progressing in their group.

Akanji and Switzerland will face the might of Germany, Albania and Scotland.

Spain

Rodri will be a key figure for the Spanish in Germany. The defensive midfielder proved to be a rock in the heart of the City side last season and will no doubt be an essential player for the Spanish national side.

His Spain team will face Croatia, Italy and Albania.

Netherlands

City’s Dutch defender Nathan Ake is the only representative in the national side and we’re looking forward to seeing how Ake and The Netherlands perform at this year’s tournament. Ake has been a consistent force in the City line-up this season and Blues fans will want to see the Dutch army do well in Germany.

The Netherlands have a tricky group to navigate, with France, Austria and Poland in their group, so some big names will be exiting the tournament at the group stage.

Who do you fancy for this year’s tournament? Do you actually care and just want City back as soon as possible?
