Gareth Taylor has made his second signing of the summer as Risa Shimizu completes her transfer to Manchester City Women. The Japanese international left West Ham at the end of last season after turning down a contract extension with the Hammers. She becomes City’s second signing of the summer after striker Vivianne Miedema joined earlier in the month.

The 28-year-old has signed a three year contract with the Blues and will link up with her Japanese teammate, Yui Hasegawa, at the Joie Stadium.

Speaking after signing her contract, Shimizu expressed her delight at the opportunity to join the Blues.

“First of all, it’ll be a challenge, but one I’m ready for,” Shimizu said. “City play football with a high possession style, which I like. I think I’m technically good and calm with the ball in possession, so I think I’ll play well in City’s style.

“I can’t wait to get started and hopefully lift the trophy with my new team-mates.”

The full-back will fill the void left by Esme Morgan, who left the Blues to join Washington Spirit at the end of last season and manager Taylor sees Shimizu as the perfect replacement.

“Risa brings intelligence and technical quality to the team. She’s an established international with huge WSL experience and we are delighted to bring her to our club.”

Welcome to Manchester, Risa Shimizu.
