Anti-theft software upgrades provided for Hyundai and Kia vehicles regularly targeted by thieves has cut theft rates by more than half, according to new research from the Highway Loss Data Institute. Approximately two dozen 2011-22 Hyundai and Kia models are eligible for the software upgrade. Those vehicles that received it as of December 2023 — a total of 30% of the eligible Hyundais and 28% of the eligible Kias in HLDI’s database — had theft claim frequencies that were 53% lower than vehicles that didn’t get the upgrade, according to HLDI.

The mayhem that swept across world markets this week was partly caused by a market strategy known as the “carry trade.” Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 plunged 12.4% on Monday and other world markets also suffered outsized losses as traders sold stocks to help cover rising risks from investments made using cheaply financed funds borrowed mostly in Japanese yen. Markets were jolted by a combination of factors. That includes fears of a recession in the United States and worries that technology shares have shot way too high this year. But the scale of the declines was exaggerated by the rush to sell dollars due to carry trade deals that had helped drive markets to record levels.

The uncle of the Uvalde, Texas, school shooter who killed 19 students and two teachers begged police to let him try to talk his nephew down. The call came in about 1 p.m. on May 24, 2022, about 10 minutes after Ramos' nephew, Salvador Ramos, was killed by authorities.

Donald Trump is putting immigration at the heart of his campaign to retake the White House. He is pushing the Republican Party towards an aggressive strategy of deporting millions of people. The plans have raised the stakes of this year’s election beyond the border security that conservatives have typically prioritized to a fundamental change in the American approach to immigration. After the southern border saw a historic number of crossings during the Biden administration, Democrats have also moved rightward on the issue, often leading with promises of border security before talking about relief for the immigrants who are already in the country.

“Alien” Romulus," one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, is set to be one of the scariest, as well. Director Fede Álvarez, the horror filmmaker behind “Evil Dead” and “Don't Breathe,” used animatronic and puppet alien creatures, including the famed “face huggers” and the dreaded xenomorph, as he made the film. The film's star, Cailee Spaeny, says those practical effects made it easy to act terrified. She called the frightful creations “such a gift because you’re not having to act against a tennis ball.” The creatures were created with help from a team who worked with legendary practical effects wizard Stan Winston. “Alien: Romulus” releases in theaters Aug. 16.
