The Desert Bush Walk: Winter 2024-Annual Charity Walk Reflecting back on The Desert Bush Walk 2024 that was held in Jwaneng uniting participants from across the continent in an experience that was as grueling as it was inspiring. This event was graced by His Honor the Vice President of Botswana, Mr. Slumber Tsogwane as Chief Hiker alongside Her Majesty, Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso from Lesotho. The Desert Bush Walk is hosted by CSI Concepts and this year's event was dedicated to addressing mental health issues, a critical focus given Botswana's current socio-economic challenges, including high rates of Gender-Based Violence and the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. The funds raised are aimed at supporting relevant institutions and initiatives that tackle these pressing issues, demonstrating a commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of the less privileged. As hikers laced up their boots and ventured into the desert terrain Botswana Oil Limited (BOL) employees were geared up for it. They were not just taking on a demanding trek but also engaging in a profound exercise of mental and physical resilience. Mr. Oteng Gaolatlhe, the BOL Jwaneng Site Manager participated with other BOL team members and described the walk as an ultimate test of pushing one’s mind to its fullest potential. He says one has to engage all their senses, the stress on their feet, the visual strain in navigating the path, the taste of sustaining snacks, the sound of interactions, the need to be alert, and the persistent dust that tested their sense of smell. Gaolatlhe aptly called it "MIND FOOD" – a fitting term for an experience that demanded mental and physical endurance to process and overcome. Ms. Kefilwe Monorwa, another BOL participant says the desert bushwalk served as a fun, challenging workout activity, it started with the excitement of gearing up, (Hikers bring in the A game with big heavy mountain bags, steel cups, extra per of shoes ,gaiters , just to name a few). The ambiance in the morning was full of energy , everyone had the umph, excitement of meeting friends ,colleagues, new people. Kefilwe says it was a true workout for the entire human system, leaving participants with a sense of accomplishment. Rooted in a charitable mission, hikers enjoyed the physical challenge presented by the terrains and BOL employees consider it as one event not to be missed.

The opening ceremony featured His Worship, the Mayor Lucas Modimana, who welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of private sector investment in revitalizing Phikwe's economy following the closure of the BCL mine. The Mayor also encouraged exploration of dam-based fish farming, expressing confidence in Business Botswana's ability to foster profitable and sustainable business ventures. Business Botswana CEO Mr Norman Moleele highlighted the successful turnout, with over 50 exhibitors displaying their products and services. The partnership with the Selebi Phikwe Town Council, inspired by the Mayor’s visit to the Northern Trade Fair in Francistown, was a key factor in the event's success. The CEO looked forward to continued collaborations that would drive economic prosperity for the region. Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Beauty Manake, reiterated the Government’s Policy to reserve 30% of procurement for companies in the SPEDU client database. She encouraged the Phikwe community to organise a fashion show to showcase locally produced clothing. The Hon Minister highlighted the high-quality uniform of the Police Services and Botswana Defence Force manufactured in Selibe Phikwe. She urged Batswana to seize the restriction on vegetable importation as an opportunity to boost local production. Area Councillor Ms Dineo Makarapa closed the event by expressing gratitude to all stakeholders and exhibitors. She emphasized that since the closure of the BCL mine, there is significant potential in horticulture to boost Phikwe's economy. She highlighted the town's abundant fertile land and urged investment in agricultural initiatives to drive economic growth and to create employment for the community. The Selebi Phikwe Trade Fair & Agric Expo 2024 successfully demonstrated Phikwe’s potential for innovation and growth, setting the stage for future economic development and self-sufficiency in food production.
