We have over 50 hormones circulating in their bodies that regulate everything from our appetite to reproduction to blood sugar. Hormone disruptions can lead to symptoms such as: ➡️ Headaches ➡️ Trouble concentrating ➡️ Muscle weakness or pain ➡️ Movement challenges ➡️ Fatigue ➡️ Irregular periods ➡️ Mood swings ➡️ Metabolism shifts, including weight loss/gain ➡️ Delayed puberty ➡️ Developmental and growth abnormalities Check out this article on the reasons behind different types of hormonal imbalances and how to potentially prevent them with lifestyle measures such as stress reduction, better diet and exercise along with enough sleep. #HormonalHealth

Nature helps our health 💚 A 2019 study found that spending as little as 2 hours per week in parks, fields and forests can led to better health and overall wellbeing. Being in nature has a calming effect and can result in a lower occurrence of stress, depression and anxiety. It’s also associated with improved learning. Virtual nature works too! Studies have found using that #virtualreality to view forests can help reduce cortisol levels in patients. Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay There are about 4,500 deaths by suicide each year in Canada, according to Statistics Canada – that’s about 12 per day. A survey released in February revealed alarming stats for Canadian workers where 23% of those surveyed said they had thoughts of self-harm or suicide in the previous two weeks, and 36% had such thoughts in the previous year. Notably there was disparity between age groups too - folks over 45 reported lower instances of these feelings as compared to those in the under 45 age group. Also while 1 in 5 respondents were concerned about a colleague’s potential for self-harm or suicide, 68% of workers have not received training on how to handle a co-worker’s severe depression. Rather than focusing on prevention of mental health issues due to stress, many workplace policies end up focusing more on addressing crises after the fact. Access to timely mental health support and personalized programs that are specific to the individual are needed in order to appropriately manage stress and burnout in the workplace, and eventually help prevent certain crises situations. If you and your team are interested in learning more about our Mental Health on Demand program and how it’s helping enhance the mental health for employees, please reach out to our team. Let’s talk inflammation 🆘 Inflammation is a normal part of our body’s response to injuries and invaders (like germs). It promotes healing and helps us feel better. But inflammation that happens when there’s no injury can harm healthy parts of the body as well as lead to a range of chronic diseases. There are two main types of inflammation: acute and chronic. Acute inflammation is sudden and temporary, while chronic inflammation can go on for months or years. The most common way to measure inflammation is to conduct a blood test for C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), which is a marker of inflammation. hs-CRP is produced in the liver and released into the blood in response to various inflammatory triggers, like infection, injury, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, sedentary lifestyle, processed foods high in fat/sugar etc. Check out InsideTracker’s blog for more info on key markers and tests for inflammation ⤵️ #Preventative #Inflammation

As more research confirms the negative health effects of alcohol consumption, even in moderate amounts, long-held beliefs about the potential health benefits of the occasional drink or two are shifting 🙆🏽♀️ A large new study published recently found that moderate-level alcohol consumption raised disease-related mortality risk and showed no overall benefits for older adults. Also a new Gallup poll highlighted the unhealthy perception of alcohol that young people in the United States held. Around 65% of adults (18 to 34) said that they believed alcohol negatively affects health. Indeed, there seems to be a growing “sober curious” movement among Gen Zers.
