Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO) is delighted to announce the successful partnership with Caesars Windsor Cares for the 2024 Dinah Kerr Walk N Roll. The event, held on August 17th, was a resounding success, with Caesars Windsor Cares generously donating $10,000 to the ALSO Foundation 😲 ❤️ This substantial contribution will support the 2024-2025 Social Recreation Events and the Community Inclusion program, greatly benefiting numerous individuals and families in our community. The Dinah Kerr Walk N Roll has long been a cornerstone event for ALSO, blending community spirit with a significant cause. This year's event lived up to its reputation, bringing together participants and supporters for an inspiring day of solidarity and support. In total, the event raised over $21,000. Today, I visited Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO), where they help individuals transition to independent living. Their dedicated team supports those with physical disabilities, brain injuries, vulnerable seniors, as well as those experiencing homelessness.   Thank you for hosting us today, and for your commitment to fostering independence for your clients.

Last night, I attended my last Annual Meeting as a board member at Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO). Volunteering here for 8 years has been a privilege, but one of my proudest moments happened at their 'Living Library' yesterday. I was speaking with staff who'd been around a while, and they shared that the workplace is different. They experience less stress. They feel more motivated and engaged. They know they're making a difference and feel like they're valued for it. We talked about some of the things that contribute to that. One, is the strong leadership of Leigh Vachon, who has been a champion of the organization for many years, and recently celebrated her first year in the ED position. She and her team have accomplished so much during that short time. Some things we talked about that have contributed to the positive culture: 1. Leadership lets staff at all levels know that their wellness is important, and develop systems to put those sentiments into action. Staff recognize the actions the organization has taken and feel supported. 2. There is a seemingly endless need for supports to make our community more accessible and inclusive for people with physical disabilities. Going against the grain in the non-profit culture, ALSO continues to say 'yes' to responding, but only when there is funding attached. They work with funders to help them see the value of the services they offer and ensure that any increase in services has a corresponding increase in funding. Staff no longer feel the need to work beyond their capacity and say yes at a detriment to their wellbeing. 3. They're using data to inform cost drivers and develop innovative responses. Coming up with new staffing models (in collaboration with the union) and ensuring a robust administrative team has increased stability for the organization. Looking across the organization rather than within funding portfolios allows for more comprehensive planning and more nimble control of budgets. We're still learning about the influences of all of these actions, and of course there is lots more to do, but from my perspective, taking good care of staff is key to positive client outcomes and community change.
