Since 1988, Bridgeway’s growth has been organic. “Good people know good people," our founder Ron Driediger would always say. Although Ron passed away in 2007, those words are embedded in Bridgeway’s legacy and continue to be our guiding principle. It's all about relationship. Fast forward to today, word of mouth continues to connect us with so many compassionate, dedicated people. But the need for loving foster families and supports has never been greater. The demand is far more than the supply, and there are kids in our communities who do not have a place to call "home". The pre-service process is a significant and foundational part of every foster parent’s journey. It is the time when you: ✅ Choose the foster care agency that’s right for you and your family. ✅ Develop a strong support system within your network of friends and family. ✅ Ask questions (A LOT OF QUESTIONS!) to build your understanding. ✅ Prepare your home. ✅ Invest time into meaningful training opportunities. ✅ Build new and trusting relationships within the fostering community. While there are several steps to complete before you become an approved foster home, this experience can be completed at a pace that respects your time and availability. During the application process, our Placement Team gets to know your family on a deeper level so that the children/youth placed with you will be best matched and will receive the care, support, and stability they require and deserve. Becoming a foster parent may be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Allow us to come alongside you, guide you, and support you. Together, we will embark on this journey. Lack of education is a significant predictor of early pregnancy, unemployment, homelessness and poverty, and foster youth are particularly vulnerable to facing these challenges. It is devastating to learn that only 44% of Ontario youth who are placed in foster care graduate high school, around half the rate of the general population. According to Statistics Canada data from 2016-2021, 88.4% of students in Canada graduated within five years. But Bridgeway youth are changing this bleak forecast and defying the provincial norms for those in care. In the same year range, over 80% of our young people graduated high school, and many of those graduates have enrolled in post-secondary education. Year after year, Bridgeway youth continue to surmount adversity. They should be so proud of their hard work. (We sure are!) Today we are celebrating 36 years of dedication and impact. For over three and a half decades, we have had the honor and privilege of serving children and families, making a difference in countless lives. Our journey has been one of compassion, commitment, and unwavering support. From the very beginning, our mission has been to create a nurturing and empowering environment for children to thrive and for families to grow stronger together.
