A Canadian community of individuals, organizations & investors working in developing countries to make a positive impact
About us
The Canada Forum for Impact Investment and Development (CAFIID) is a platform for members to learn, share, collaborate and act as a collective voice to strengthen the value and the volume of impact investment in developing countries. CAFIID will advance Canada’s contributions, and flows of capital, towards impact investment in developing countries creating more sustainable and equitable communities. CAFIID is a Canadian community of individuals, organizations and investors working in developing countries who treat social and environmental impact and financial return as coexisting priorities. Collectively, CAFIID members combine many years of collaboration and engagement with a track record of innovation in structuring and funding impact investment products, designing and delivering technical assistance, and promoting sustainable investment ecosystem. The Canada Forum for Impact Investment and Development (CAFIID) was established by MEDA in the summer of 2014. CAFIID rapidly gained support of industry stakeholders – including senior representatives of impact investment funds, non-governmental organizations, foundations, family offices, consulting firms, research institutions and businesses – who wished to offer a collective voice in support of transformative development finance mechanisms. Early activities involved regular meetings at events such as the Social Finance Forum (SFF), hosting of public forums, development of marketing materials, awareness raising and advocacy with the government of Canada, and growth of the network itself. In 2016, with momentum building and the support of network members, members decided to formalize the association by setting up a steering committee and working groups and move to the next stage of its development. CAFIID became a registered Canadian non-profit organization in August 2017 and elected its first board in September 2017.

"As I look ahead, I’m filled with optimism. The challenges of impact investing are what make the work so fulfilling." 🌳 🇨🇦 CAFIID's Vice-Chair Patrick Hergt shares his story from over a decade in the sector, and in Canada.
Two dates changed my professional life: The day I moved to Canada and the day I joined Sarona. Here's what I've learned over 12 years of being part of a global impact investing firm. January 1st, 2011, marked a turning point in my life—I moved to Canada to complete my undergraduate degree, a decision that reshaped every aspect of my journey. This set the stage for the next significant date: September 1st, 2012, when I began as a Junior Business Analyst at Sarona Asset Management. We were a small team of seven in an office the size of my garage, gearing up to launch our first commercial fund of funds. The past 12 years have been a rollercoaster of emotions—successes, challenges, and invaluable lessons. It’s been the essence of entrepreneurship—never a dull moment, always something new to learn. Reflecting on our journey from that small office, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come. Sarona has grown into a global leader in impact investing, committed to creating deep and lasting change in emerging markets. We've expanded our team, our reach, and our impact, all while staying true to our core mission: generating positive social and environmental outcomes alongside financial returns, without compromising on either. It’s been a privilege to be part of Sarona’s evolution. I've worked with passionate and driven colleagues, scaled initiatives like the Australian Development Investments (ADI) program, which supports climate, gender equality, and women-led SMEs across Asia and the Pacific, as well as our flagship Sarona Global Growth Markets Fund program, which focuses on mid-market SMEs in frontier and emerging markets. Beyond Sarona, my role as Vice Chair of the Canada Forum for Impact Investment and Development (CAFIID) has reinforced the power of collaboration in driving sustainable investment practices globally. This position allows me to connect with like-minded professionals and organizations, furthering our collective mission to build a more equitable world. As I look ahead, I’m filled with optimism. The challenges of impact investing are what make the work so fulfilling. At Sarona, we aren’t just witnessing change; we strive to driving it. And as we embark on the next chapter, I’m excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in impact investing. What pivotal moments have defined your professional journey? I’d love to hear your stories. #ImpactInvesting #Leadership #Entrepreneurship #SustainableGrowth #EmergingMarkets

Over 80 countries are holding critical elections this year at a time when democracy is on the line. What we know well: democracies are healthier when strong feminist movements exist.
