Congratulations to the RCMP and their Canadian and international law enforcement counterparts for successfully disrupting the LockBit ransomware criminal gang. The disruption of LockBit is welcome news to the Canadian organizations which have been impacted by ransomware attacks. The magnitude of this operation is evidenced by the Alert issued last year by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. The Centre noted that within Canada, “LockBit was responsible for 22% of all attributed ransomware incidents”. The coordinated police action has significantly disrupted the operational capability of what has been described as the world’s most prolific and harmful ransomware gang. The freezing of more than 200 cryptocurrency accounts linked to criminal organizations disrupts the economic incentives that drive ransomware attacks. It demonstrates that international law enforcement collaboration can be effective against cyber criminals and sends a clear message to cyber attackers. Reporting cyber crimes to the police is an important step in helping to disrupt these criminal enterprises.
