Walmart Canada has announced the deployment of its new hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric semi-truck on public roads in Mississauga, Ontario. The first retailer in Canada to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck to its fleet, Walmart Canada aims to replace its entire fleet with 100% alternatively-powered vehicles in the coming years. Hydrogen vehicles have the potential to revolutionize the transportation industry by providing a clean, efficient, and practical alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Another big step forward for the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge! 👏 Velocity Truck Centres, Canada announced the grand opening of its state-of-the-art hydrogen/CNG service bay in the Edmonton region. A first-of-its-kind for Alberta, this facility will provide supporting infrastructure needed to get 5,000 hydrogen or dual-fuel vehicles on the road in Western Canada in five years. This service bay will minimize barriers to decarbonizing the commercial transportation sector and act as a training resource to up-skill the hydrogen workforce. Hazer Group Limited has signed a binding project development agreement (PDA) with FortisBC Energy to pursue the development of a hydrogen production facility in British Columbia that will utilize the pyrolysis technology to produce up to 2,500 tonnes of hydrogen and around 9,500 tonnes of graphite per year. Since November 2022, the Geological Survey of Canada has been building a database of potential #naturalhydrogen deposits. "Canada has a lot of potential because of the vastness, because of the type of rocks," said Omid H. Ardakani, a research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada. "More than 50 per cent of Canada is covered with the potential source rocks." The Geological Survey of Canada is also exploring the potential for underground hydrogen storage in salt deposits and caverns in different parts of the country. Helium mining areas in Saskatchewan and Alberta could be suitable, as well as seismic zones in British Columbia.
