Feminist entrepreneurship? Is it really a thing? Below is a useful article to help you find out what makes it distinct. Ultimately, feminist entrepreneurs see entrepreneurship as a pathway to personal and collective liberation. It is for them, a vital form of activism. For feminist entrepreneurs, business is political. Not just about economics. Aren't all women entrepreneurs feminist entrepreneurs? No. Just like not all women are feminists and not all feminists are women. Unlike beauty, feminism is not defined by the eye of the beholder. If YOU, in your heart, regardless of gender, identify as a feminist entrepreneur--then that is what you are. Period. Welcome to the community. Feminist entrepreneurship is also defined by the company you keep. Feminist entrepreneurs belong to feminist groups, they engage with feminist researchers, writers, creatives, and nonprofits/cooperative/collective feminist organizations --who are all pulling on the same rope. It's multi-sector, pluralistic, international community that considers all feminisms and values aligned movement organizations as part of their enterprise ecosystem. Feminist entrepreneurs take their enterprise building and leadership cues from folks like adrienne maree brown (emergent strategy), community organizers, community finance thinkers like Caroline Shenaz H., feminist organizations (Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) and movement leaders like Alicia Garza (co-founder of BLM) versus 1990's Lean Startup dogma (which sadly still blankets and essentially smothers much needed pluralism in entrepreneurship education). Gunraj writes "If the promises of feminist entrepreneurship are legion, why aren’t there more feminist businesses in Canada? Our entrepreneurial ecosystem is not a friendly space for it to thrive. There aren’t enough government supports for feminist entrepreneurs. Programs designed to boost women entrepreneurs are usually agnostic about business models themselves. They operate at the level of greater representation, not at the level of transformation. Feminist business models aren’t acknowledged in these programs, let alone nurtured." I agree. The majority of co-ed incubators and accelerators don't even have the expertise on staff, or in their incubator community to actually provide useful guidance or connections for folks trying challenge capitalism (versus master it), prosper and dismantle harmful systems a the same time. Just like eco-entrepreneurship, solidarity economy entrepreneurship, feminist entrepreneurship is an important variant that needs to be normalized. I along with many others are working to do just that. I am thrilled that the The Canadian Women's Foundation, Canadian Women's Chamber of Commerce (CanWCC), Rise, OCAD University and increasingly other institutions are starting to invest in supporting this unique approach. https://lnkd.in/dUyCayrQ #feministbiz #feministentrepreneurship
