“Digital transformation is not about technology – it’s about change.” One of my goals for 2024 besides completing my PhD has been reading a book a week. This week I had the opportunity to read, Delivering Digital Transformation: A Manager’s Guide to The Digital Revolution by Alan W. Brown. I wanted to read it before his latest book, Surviving and Thriving in the Age of AI arrived and perfect timing as it just arrived on Friday. This book provides insights to business leaders, industry strategists, academics, and policy makers who are all seeking to define strategies for success in our increasingly digital economy. It also equips today's leaders, managers, and practitioners with the tools needed to understand, lead, and deliver in the digital age and continues to shape my inquiry into organizational change, digital strategy, and transformation in an age of disruption. With my focus on the human dimensions and management of the digital culture including lifelong learning, Alan’s book highlights the continued importance of considering digital transformation in terms of an organization’s current structure, and the cultural implications for change when undertaking the digital transformation journey. Organizations need to move quickly and effectively away from outdated business models and become more adaptable for the digital age. “Leaders should perceive digital transformation as a shit in mindset and organizational culture, rather than just a technology upgrade.” I also highly recommend subscribing to Alan Brown’s Weekly Digital Economy Dispatches for continued news and view on the digital economy. All technological change creates conflict. This is something we have seen from the Industrial Revolution to today's rapid advances in AI. As a result, leaders and decision-makers in organizations looking to scale up AI adoption are recognizing that they must come to terms with the implications of being at the forefront of a technological shift that rivals, and is at least as transformative as the introduction of the steam engine. Thank you Alan Brown for another fantastic post and I look forward to reading your new book, Surviving and Thriving in the Age of AI: A Handbook for Digital Leaders which just arrived next week! Try this Week – Track Your Time Often when I meet people I ask, “How are things going?” The common response is that they are super busy with work related activities, and they never seem to be able to catch up. When the conversation turns to personal goals like education, travel or hobbies, the response always comes back to, “too busy for that.” I tend to believe that being too busy often really means not being very productive and that productivity can be learned. The first step is really understanding what you are doing with your time. Track everything you do in a day, including personal and professional activities for a week using a notebook or piece of paper. What are you doing with your time? How much of it is spent on productive activities that produce results? How much of your time is spent checking emails, social media accounts or other activities that don’t add anything to your productivity or personal goals? The results may surprise you. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF! Distractions are one of the biggest obstacles to productivity and although technology has increased our productivity, the reverse is also true. Use technology, don’t be USED by TECHNOLOGY! Try removing email and social media accounts from your mobile device for a week. If someone really needs to contact, you they will text or call. What other distractions are keeping you from being productive? Eliminate them, one at a time and see how your productivity increases. Wishing everyone an amazing week! #culturechange #digitaltransformation #futureproof #lifelonglearning #educationalleadership #collaboration #communication #sustainability #disruption #change #commonground #sensemaking #canada #futureskills #community #ai #cybersecurity #dataprivacy #goals #productivity

Human Infrastructure: Building AI Competency - While data and technology infrastructures are crucial, the success of enterprise AI also hinges on the human element. Building a skilled workforce and fostering a culture of continuous learning are essential for maximizing the potential of AI. 👉 Talent Acquisition and Development: Enterprises must prioritize the acquisition and development of AI talent. This includes hiring data scientists, machine learning engineers, and AI researchers who possess the technical expertise to drive AI initiatives. Moreover, investing in ongoing training and development programs ensures that the workforce remains up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI. 👉 Cross-Functional Collaboration: AI initiatives often require collaboration across various departments, including IT, operations, marketing, and finance. Establishing cross-functional teams encourages diverse perspectives and fosters a culture of innovation. Effective communication and collaboration are critical for aligning AI projects with business objectives and ensuring their successful implementation. 👉 Leadership and Governance: Strong leadership and governance are vital for guiding AI initiatives. Leaders must establish clear AI strategies, set realistic expectations, and allocate resources effectively. Additionally, implementing governance frameworks ensures that AI projects adhere to ethical standards and regulatory requirements. By investing in human infrastructure, enterprises can build the necessary expertise and culture to support their AI initiatives, driving long-term success and innovation.
