We have received $11,428,628 in funding from CMHC’s Housing Accelerator Fund, which aims to expedite construction of 100,000 new housing units nationwide, in order for us to advance initiatives that will increase the variety and availability of our city's housing supply. This funding will allow us to facilitate over 2,300 new units by 2027 through the implementation of several initiatives outlined in a new action plan, which includes the 22nd Street Station Area Bold Vision and acceleration of the development approval process, infill housing, townhouses, affordable housing, inclusionary housing, and family friendly housing. In addition to the action plan, the Housing Accelerator Fund grant will also be used to invest in improving and expanding infrastructure necessary to support housing growth. Today we were honoured to hold a traditional Indigenous blessing ceremony performed by members of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) for artist James Harry as we officially unveiled his work, Miyíw̓ts - Water's Edge, at the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre. Miyíw̓ts (pronounced mee-yutes) was recently installed on the south plaza and now welcomes visitors inside the newly opened facility. Perched above a Cor-ten inlay designed in the shape of a Coast Salish eye, the artwork features a stunning 16ft mirror polished stainless steel sculpture with gold leaf recesses that reflects the strength and power of the site's former Glenbrook Ravine and Coast Salish presence on these lands. Starting today, New Westminster’s firefighters will be practicing as Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) instead of First Responders. This is a licensing designation that allows New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services to provide a greater level of medical assistance at pre-hospital medical aid calls, augmenting local medical response resources and helping to ensure patients receive the critical care they need in a timely manner. Under the new scope of practice, New Westminster firefighters will be able to assess blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and chest sounds. They will also be able to administer nitroglycerin and acetylsalicylic acid medication for emergency cardiac events, use bleeding control and pelvic binding tools for traumatic events, and have more pain control options. Additional patient assessment and treatment capabilities will be introduced later this year, including measuring blood sugar levels and administering glucagon for diabetic emergencies, epinephrine for extreme allergic reactions, and salbutamol for respiratory emergencies.
