Today we were honoured to hold a traditional Indigenous blessing ceremony performed by members of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) for artist James Harry as we officially unveiled his work, Miyíw̓ts - Water's Edge, at the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre. Miyíw̓ts (pronounced mee-yutes) was recently installed on the south plaza and now welcomes visitors inside the newly opened facility. Perched above a Cor-ten inlay designed in the shape of a Coast Salish eye, the artwork features a stunning 16ft mirror polished stainless steel sculpture with gold leaf recesses that reflects the strength and power of the site's former Glenbrook Ravine and Coast Salish presence on these lands. Starting today, New Westminster’s firefighters will be practicing as Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) instead of First Responders. This is a licensing designation that allows New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services to provide a greater level of medical assistance at pre-hospital medical aid calls, augmenting local medical response resources and helping to ensure patients receive the critical care they need in a timely manner. Under the new scope of practice, New Westminster firefighters will be able to assess blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and chest sounds. They will also be able to administer nitroglycerin and acetylsalicylic acid medication for emergency cardiac events, use bleeding control and pelvic binding tools for traumatic events, and have more pain control options. Additional patient assessment and treatment capabilities will be introduced later this year, including measuring blood sugar levels and administering glucagon for diabetic emergencies, epinephrine for extreme allergic reactions, and salbutamol for respiratory emergencies. The image featured on this year's Red Dress Day pin was created by artist Skyyes Steqoye Kelly-Gabriel, qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓ Artist's Statement: "The design intentions are to honour Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited. The hands held up are to show respect and honour the MMIWG2S+; the red is to recognize and call the spirits of the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited to loved ones; it is to show the connection and relation we have to our relatives. Women, girls and two-spirited are sacred; they are life givers. They need to be acknowledged, protected and honoured. The base of the design is to represent a drum and the teachings passed down to me; the drum is the connection to our mothers, ancestors and ourselves - it is the heartbeat of our mothers and our ancestors." New Westminster ranks third for child care spaces among the 17 larger municipalities which comprise Metro Vancouver, with 34.4 spaces per 100 children (aged 0 to 12 years) compared to the overall average of about 25 spaces. We’re proud to have some of the most permissive municipal bylaws and regulations for creating new child care spaces and have been progressive in our approach, awarding grants to non-profit child care operators and approving development variance permits to assist operators in meeting outdoor play space licensing requirements. And we’re working closely with the School District and the Province to facilitate additional child care spaces centers as opportunities present themselves.

Having sufficient affordable child care is essential for a healthy, diverse, and equitable region. Metro Vancouver has released its updated inventory of child care spaces in the region, including a summary in each municipality. This data helps inform member jurisdictions, social planners, and policy makers, helping them address current challenges and plan for projected population growth. Find data like this and more in the latest report: 👨👩👧👦👨👨👧 As of 2023, the number of child care spaces in Metro Vancouver grew by 35% from 2019. 🧒Metro Vancouver now has about 25 spaces per 100 children 12 and under, an increase from 18.5 in 2019. 👶About two thirds of member jurisdictions now offer $10 per day childcare facilities. Supporting planning for sufficient child care forms part of Metro Vancouver’s work towards fostering complete communities — where people have access to a range of housing choices, employment opportunities, amenities, and services. ✅Find out more about complete communities and read the Survey of Licensed Child Care Spaces in Metro Vancouver report https://lnkd.in/giwy26TS #MetroVancouver #Metro2050 #childcare #regionaldata
