At Connective, we’re committed to the safety and well-being of our community. One of the ways we do so, is by training all of our support staff on administering Naloxone (Narcan) in the event of an overdose. In honour of International Overdose Awareness Day this week, here’s a quick guide on how you can recognize an overdose and use Naloxone effectively. Knowing how to respond to an overdose and use Naloxone is a crucial step in preventing overdoses. Equip yourself with the knowledge and tools to potentially save a life. Share this fact sheet to help spread this important information with your networks. Together, we can create communities that are safe, healthy, and inclusive for all. For more resources and information on local harm reduction services, as well as where to access Naloxone in BC and Yukon, please visit: https://loom.ly/pnx1aaA #WeAreConnective #BCNonProfit #OverdoseAwareness

From individual sessions to group ceremonies like smudging, drum-making, and sweats, our programs at Georgian Court are designed to foster a strong sense of identity and belonging for our Indigenous residents. With the invaluable guidance of Elder Sandy, residents now have the opportunity to (re)connect with their roots through a variety of activities and teachings offered five days a week. One resident, Joseph*, embraced these opportunities wholeheartedly, participating in beading, preparing the sweat grounds, and contributing to the community through his work with Elder Hank. His journey of growth led him to secure a job on a local community clean-up crew, a testament to the transformative power of cultural connection. Providing these supports is crucial in helping our residents feel at home, connected, and empowered in their communities. At Connective Kamloops, we believe that by offering Indigenous-based programming, we honor the rich traditions of our residents and strengthen the bonds that hold our community together. As we approach International Overdose Awareness Day, it's a critical time to remember the importance of Canada's Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. By removing the fear that comes with calling for help and remaining on scene, the act helps saves lives. What You Need to Know: • The Act provides legal protection for anyone seeking emergency help during a drug poisoning, protecting them from charges related to simple drug possession, even those on parole or probation. • Every second counts during an overdose. Don't hesitate to act —your call can be the difference between life and death. • The Act ensures that when you call 911, your primary focus is helping the person in need, not worrying about legal issues. Drug poisoning deaths are preventable. By knowing your rights under the Good Samaritan Act, you can help save lives. Share this info with your networks to help keep your community safe and break the stigma. Our latest Annual Report highlights the incredible stories within our community. Lorne, is a resident and artist living at Bedford Manor, who has found peace and purpose through his art. Bedford Manor, an assisted living facility in Kamloops, offers a safe and supportive home for individuals like Lorne, empowering them to maintain their independence. After rediscovering his passion for painting in his 40s, Lorne now shares his paintings with fellow residents, bringing joy and connection through his monthly contributions to Bedford Manor’s newsletter. His story is a beautiful reminder of the importance of community, support, and pursuing creative expression. We’re proud to support individuals like Lorne and are grateful for the dedicated program staff who make Bedford Manor a place where residents can thrive. With summer in full swing, our community gardens are thriving, offering vibrant spaces where residents can come together, enjoy the sunshine, and nurture both plants and relationships! At Connective, we believe in the strength of community and the healing power of nature. From Fraser Valley to Price George, our community gardens foster connections and cultivate wellness. Whether it's a place for quiet reflection, a chance to learn new skills, or an opportunity to connect with neighbors, Connective gardens have something to offer both residents and staff: - Fostering Community: A sense of community reduces isolation and strengthens the bonds between individuals. - Promoting Mental and Physical Well-being: Gardening has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, providing a therapeutic outlet for residents. - Empowerment and Skill-Building: By participating in the care and maintenance of the garden, residents learn valuable skills in gardening, teamwork, and responsibility, which can be applied in other areas of their lives. - Access to Fresh Food: Gardens provide fresh, nutritious produce, which can be especially valuable in supportive housing where residents might have limited access to healthy food options. - Creating a Sense of Ownership and Pride: Being involved in the creation and upkeep of a garden fosters a sense of ownership and pride among residents, helping them feel more connected to their living environment and invested in their community. Today, August 10, is Prisoner’s Justice Day (PJD). It holds profound significance for those in prison and those standing in solidarity, as we come together and remember all who have suffered and died unnecessarily, as victims of murder, suicide, or neglect. As a justice services provider, we are reminded of the value of supporting individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. While our programs and services have diversified over the years, our roots in criminal justice remain central to our mission. Every day, we support those in, and transitioning from, criminal justice institutions across BC and the Yukon. Connective is committed to playing a meaningful role in dismantling the barriers faced by those experiencing incarceration. We strive to listen to the experiences of those currently or formerly in prison, reflect on the stories of those who’ve endured the hardships of incarceration, and push for a more just and humane prison system. If you would like to learn about the origins and history of PJD, please read our PJD blog post here: https://loom.ly/ZbcJCDo #WeAreConnective #BCNonProfit #PrisonersJusticeDay

The Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is a reminder of the importance of learning, listening, and making ongoing efforts towards Reconciliation. For 2024, the theme is: ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’. In regions outside of Canada, around 200 groups of Indigenous Peoples live in voluntary isolation and initial contact, residing in remote forests rich in natural resources. These environments allow them to freely engage in hunting and gathering, thereby preserving their cultures and languages. We stand in solidary with Indigenous Peoples across these global regions and support the protection of Indigenous rights to traditional land and culture. As we commemorate International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting Indigenous rights and amplifying Indigenous voices here at home, through our daily work at Connective.
