Reducing my individual consumption by repurposing the materials from other products at the end of their lifecycle to create new, functional products is something that brings me so much joy! Volunteering at Concordia University Centre for Creative Reuse (CUCCR) as part of the Sustainability Ambassadors program encourages me to develop this skill and has allowed me to meet and be inspired by so many creative and resourceful people. I made this backpack using materials gathered from worn and damaged clothing and other textiles. -The exterior fabric, buttons, and zippers are all salvaged from old pairs of jeans, making it sturdy and durable. (I would add stylish, but that's a matter of opinion!) -The inner lining and the lining of the pockets is all salvaged from uniforms from my former job, which are not recycled between employees and are branded so cannot be donated. -In between these two layers is a third layer made of fabric salvaged from damaged and discarded umbrellas, to make it waterproof. The backpack I was using before was about ten years old, falling apart and beyond repair. Instead of trailing snacks behind me wherever I go, I decided to make my own backpack customized to my preferences. I expect this one to last a lot longer than ten years and to be easily repairable.

Pramila Choudhary is one of the outstanding doctoral students involved with the Sustainability Ambassadors Program! Pop by the Concordia University Centre for Creative Reuse (CUCCR) to get her help re-using items or the Milieux Institute to see some of her workshops and research. Pramila has been a wonderful example of how to combine research, knowledge, and community connections. She introduces herself here: "I am Pramila, a trained textile designer, plant lover, and community builder. I enjoy volunteering and learning about various cultures. After working within industry and various non-profit organizations designing textiles using natural materials, especially within fast fashion brands, I was always questioning the amount of pre-consumer waste. That led me to my current practice and PhD research abroad on sheep wool, Indigenous knowledge systems and how to implement them in our current climate situation to create a “climate positive” environment while building community. All my learning is informed by my early exposure of living on a farm with my dad and visiting my naani (grandmother) in the Thar desert.
