Earlier today, ERA, along with Minister Rebecca Schulz, announced a $5 million investment from the Government of Alberta to support the production of battery-grade Lithium Carbonate from locally sourced industrial brine at E3 Lithium. “There is a critical minerals race happening worldwide, and Alberta is setting the pace. Home to Canada’s largest brine reserves, well-documented drill sites and a talented oil and gas workforce, our province is the best place for E3 Lithium to get this great technology closer to commercialization. Together, we are supporting jobs, diversifying the economy, and creating a brighter energy future where Alberta is a global leader in lithium production,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. Traditionally, lithium-containing brines were treated as a byproduct of oil and gas extraction and re-injected underground. However, with Lithium’s novel technology, it is possible to extract this vital mineral. This presents an opportunity to access this high-demand resource. Alberta has substantial reserves, documented drill sites, and the expertise of its oil and gas workers. This morning, Minister Rebecca Schulz joined ERA’s CEO Justin Riemer at E3 Lithium to announce a $5 million investment to support novel technology to produce battery-grade lithium from locally sourced industrial brine. This investment represents a significant advancement in leveraging Alberta's lithium resources and diversify the province's low-carbon economy. This funding is sourced from the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund. E3's $13.2 million demonstration project aims to test technology for extracting brine from local well sites, processing it into lithium concentrate, and refining it into battery-grade lithium hydroxide. The project has the potential to produce and sell lithium hydroxide, with discussions already underway for off-take agreements with auto manufacturers for electric vehicle resources.
