We help reduce GHG emissions and strengthen the competitiveness of new and existing industries in Alberta.
About us
ERA receives grants from government to fulfil our mandate. This funding comes from Alberta’s large emitters who choose to pay into the Climate Change and Emissions Management Fund as a compliance option if they are unable to meet emissions reduction targets. For a decade and a half, our clean technology investments have helped innovators develop and demonstrate Alberta-based technologies that reduce emissions, lower costs, attract investment, and create jobs in Alberta. Mandate To identify and accelerate innovative solutions that secure Alberta’s success in a lower carbon economy. Vision Alberta is recognized as an innovation and technology leader in a lower carbon world. To achieve its vision and mandate, ERA will: Reduce GHG emissions - Fund innovative solutions that result in meaningful greenhouse gas emissions reductions in Alberta and contribute to a lower carbon world. Advance innovation system priorities - Leverage our strengths to contribute to critical climate change innovation priorities in Alberta. Measure and communicate success - Define and report on metrics to demonstrate results. Achieve operational excellence - Strive for excellence in operations and efficiency while maintaining responsiveness to stakeholders and funders. Congratulations to Cando Rail & Terminals on the expansion of their Sturgeon Terminal! ERA was proud to support a previous initiative which involved replacing diesel generators in switching locomotives with lithium-ion batteries, funded through our first Industrial Transformation Challenge in 2022.
A big announcement from Steve Bromley from Cando Rail & Terminals at the Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association Annual Conference 2024. They are doubling the size of their Sturgeon Terminal through investment of up to $200 million. This monumental commitment will create upto 2,500 new railcar storage spaces and facilitate staging of 12,000 foot unit trains! Construction will begin in 2025 and once completed, it will be the largest train terminal in Canada. This major announcement was also followed by a description of Cando’s ongoing project to develop a battery powered locomotive! #cleantech #cleantechnologies #circulareconomy #AIHA2024

Minister Rebecca Schulz just announced a $2.8 million investment in Varme Energy to advance Canada’s first-ever waste-to-energy facility with integrated carbon capture and storage. Located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, Varme’s waste-to-energy facility will combust garbage from City of Edmonton landfills to generate electricity on-site and for the grid. Plus, it will include carbon capture and storage technology to sequester carbon emissions from the facility, creating a carbon-negative process. The project will eliminate hundreds of thousands of greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs for Albertans, and add millions of dollars to the province’s GDP. This funding is sourced from the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.
