It also offers an interesting view on how we can "innoculate" ourselves and our children from immutable tribal thinking. In honor of Juneteenth, we wanted to reflect on the power of education as a critical means of contributing to health equity for the African American people. During slavery, education was systematically denied to slaves as literacy was seen as a threat to the institution of slavery. Freed slaves and their descendants saw education as a key to independence, empowerment, and full participation in society. Immediately after emancipation, African Americans began to organize schooling for themselves and their children, despite facing many challenges.    Today, Juneteenth is a time for learning and education. We know that education is a major determinant of health outcomes. But there continues to be significant disparities in the health of African Americans compared to other Americans. Chronic conditions and the rates of preventable mortality are higher among African Americans. African American women experience higher rates of maternal mortality, and African American infants have higher mortality rates compared to other racial groups.    Investing in health education and accessibility is critical to ensuring a healthy future for all Americans.    As Nelson Mandela said "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."     #Juneteenth #BlackLivesMatter  #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth #DiversityInHealthcare 

While we hurtle toward AGI (artificial general intelligence), I feel a moment of hope after reading about the use of AI in dramatically improving clinical trial results. Here's an excerpt from a futures newsletter: Artificial intelligence (AI)-discovered drugs have been making significant strides in clinical trials. Over the past five years, there has been a notable increase in the number of drugs and vaccines identified through AI. These AI-discovered molecules have demonstrated a remarkable success rate of 80-90% in Phase I clinical trials, which is significantly higher than the historical industry average of around 40-60%. This trend suggests that AI algorithms are proficient at generating or identifying molecules with promising drug-like properties. For instance, AlphaFold 3, an AI model developed by Google DeepMind, has shown unprecedented accuracy in predicting protein structures, further enhancing drug discovery efforts. As AI continues to optimize the drug discovery process, it promises to significantly reduce the time and cost associated with bringing new drugs to market. For example, AI-powered platforms like the Hierarchical Interaction Network (HINT) have demonstrated potential in predicting clinical trial outcomes based on specific drug molecules and patient eligibility criteria. Additionally, the integration of AI in patient recruitment and data analysis during clinical trials has streamlined the process, making it more efficient and less prone to human error.  This efficiency also improves the likelihood of regulatory approval. The Food and Drug Administration relies heavily on precise data to guarantee that new therapeutic treatments are safe and effective for humans. Pharmaceutical companies must submit comprehensive documented data, and AI significantly aids in obtaining accurate data during clinical trials. Recognizing the importance of precision, the FDA has introduced flexibility in its risk-based regulatory framework, allowing researchers to use advanced technologies for data prediction. https://lnkd.in/g_xvDZFZ

Exciting to read about a breakthrough in identifying the cause of IBD (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease)! They have discovered "a weak spot in our DNA that is present in 95% of people with the disease. It makes it much easier for some immune cells to go haywire and drive excessive inflammation in the bowels.
