NGIF Accelerator has announced a grant of $405,300 for the scale-up, certification, and demonstration of the Hydrogen In Motion Inc. (H2M) low-pressure, solid-state hydrogen storage project. The project aims to address the challenges of hydrogen storage and transport. A Global Cleantech Challenge finalist, H2M is set to transform hydrogen technology by using a patented nanomaterial that selectively attracts hydrogen at ambient temperatures and low pressures (50 bar). This development has the potential to significantly lower hydrogen storage costs which could help make it economically viable for a wider array of uses. Through this funding, H2M aims to increase its production from 100 grams every six weeks to 10 kilograms per week, eventually developing a demonstration facility capable of producing 10,000 kilograms of hydrogen storage annually. H2M storage tanks are expected to lower capital and operating costs while opening new markets, from drones and portable devices to utility-scale energy storage. British Columba (B.C.) is home to world-class clean technology companies, hosting approximately 20% of Canada’s cleantech firms. In 2023, B.C. led in zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) with the highest per capita adoption in Canada – 22.65% of light-duty vehicles and 0.57% of medium- and heavy-duty ZEVs. The Province’s Integrated Marketplace (IM) program, and led by Innovate BC, the Heavy-Duty Low and Zero Emission Vehicles Trucking (HDZEV) project launched in June 2024 as a partnership between Transport Canada - Transports Canada, the Government of British Columbia and Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA). This pilot project seeks to de-risk and expedite the adoption of zero and low emission trucks by operators across the province. The HDZEV project will acquire zero and low-emission vehicles, including maintenance. To drive progress towards CleanBC goals and implement actions from the BC Hydrogen Strategy, the BC Clean Energy and Major Projects Office (CEMPO) is working with Foresight Canada to examine the potential for hydrogen hub development in the following regions where project development is underway and potential sources of demand exist: the Lower Mainland, Northeast BC, Interior BC (Kootenays and Okanagan), and Vancouver Island. By co-locating hydrogen production and end-use applications, hubs can ensure a balanced market while accelerating the growth of the local economy. The Lower Mainland is the first region to be assessed. Foresight reviewed publicly available literature and consulted with regional experts to investigate the following three topics: supply, demand, and regional considerations. Relative to its peers, the Lower Mainland appears well-placed to develop a hydrogen hub for several reasons: existing infrastructure, low-carbon electricity, end-use applications, and supportive policy. Recently, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced a $9.14-million investment for six projects to support innovation in Canada’s clean hydrogen sector. Of this funding, $2.74 million was allocated through the Energy Innovation Program to award four companies companies, two of whom are members: $1.25 million to the The University of British Columbia to develop a pilot plant of its patented pyrolysis technology for low-cost, low-emission hydrogen production. $590,223 to Hydrogen In Motion Inc. (H2M) in British Columbia to generate clean hydrogen with low-pressure solid-state storage, distribution and transport. We are thrilled to announce we have recently signed an agreement with VulcanX marking a significant milestone in the province's hydrogen sector. The hydrogen industry in British Columbia is still in its early stages. However, recent changes by the provincial government has paved the way for utilities to actively participate in establishing and expanding this industry. This development has the potential to unlock a new clean energy source for homes, businesses, transportation, and industry across the province.

Members FortisBC and VulcanX have signed a funding agreement to support the development of hydrogen pyrolysis technology that would see zero-emission hydrogen and solid carbon being produced from natural gas at a low cost. FortisBC, through its Clean Growth Innovation Fund, is providing funding to VulcanX for the development of its proprietary technology. "Collaborative relationships between innovative companies like VulcanX and FortisBC are helping to drive B.C.'s growing clean energy sector," said Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. "It's exciting to see collaborations underway within the sector that are reducing emissions and creating a healthier, more sustainable environment for British Columbians." Hydrogen BC is delighted to welcome Inside Passage Marine, the owner of Butedale Development Package, as a new start-up member of Canadian Hydrogen Association (CHA). Butedale Development Package includes 122 acres, plus water rights to 8km long Butedale Lake. Components of the development package are: Approximately 30 Acres of deeded land, 28 acres of deep tide water bay, 64 acres of long term leased land and rights of way, hydro-electric licenses and fresh water and approved marine operation rights. Butedale Bay is one of the few freehold properties on Princess Royal Island.
