About us

The ICPA was formed to operate as an Association for corrections and prison professionals, dedicated to improving global understanding and professionalism in the sector. As an Association, we believe that improving the professionalism and competence of correctional officers is likely to have a greater positive impact on prison conditions and the humane treatment of prisoners than most other actions. The Association is therefore not a lobbying or prisoner rights organisation but exists to provide an inclusive, safe and secure forum for the respectful exchange of ideas, technology, and best practices in the profession of corrections. ICPA promotes co-operation and collaborative initiatives between jurisdictions in areas of common interest, staff exchanges and study visits between interested jurisdictions. We encourage, where relevant, the involvement of victims, offenders' families, volunteer organisations and others in the community in finding helpful and workable solutions to correctional and criminal justice issues. We try to enhance public education, and understanding and involvement in correctional matters. ICPA is a non-governmental organisation in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).

  • Join us at the ICPA Annual Conference 2024 for an enlightening plenary session: "Reimagining Incarceration With the New American University: A Holistic, Strengths-Based Approach to Empower People in Prison." 🗣️ Speaker: Kevin Wright, PhD, Director, Arizona State University Center for Correctional Solutions 📚 About Kevin A. Wright: Dr. Wright is a pioneer of the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program in Arizona and a co-founder of the Arizona Transformation Project. His commitment to change has earned him numerous accolades, including the Washington State University Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology Distinguished Alumni Award, the American Society of Criminology Teaching Award, and the Arizona State University Faculty Women's Association Outstanding Faculty Mentor award. Don't miss out on his upcoming book, 'Imprisoned Minds: Lost Boys, Trapped Men, and Solutions from Within the Prison,' set to be published by Rutgers University Press in December 2024. 📚 About the session: Correctional success is often narrowly defined as reduced recidivism, focusing on changing thoughts and attitudes to ‘fix’ people. This plenary session challenges that deficits-based approach by proposing a strengths-based, holistic model to enhance the well-being of those living and working in correctional facilities. Dr. Wright will introduce the innovative Arizona State University (ASU) POINT Model (Potential, Opportunity, Investment, Nurture, and Transformation), leveraging university resources to promote social, economic, cultural, emotional, educational, and overall well-being. 🔗 Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how higher education institutions can reimagine corrections and foster long-term desistance! Thanks to Kevin Kempf and Rob Jeffreys for hosting me this year at CLA’s conference in Nashville. I am so excited by the growth in the relationship between the International Corrections and Prisons Association and Correctional Leaders Association and am looking to the future and how we can continue to support each other to improve correctional practice in the US and around the world. My face may look tired in this photo but I was truly energised meeting so many passionate people who are dedicated to their work, to reducing reoffending, and to improving community safety!

  • ICPA is committed to working collaboratively with our international partners. A key organisation that we operate alongside to achieve our mission is the American Correctional Association. We are pleased to support international perspectives and representation at ACA’s summer conference. Thanks to our ICPA Board members and ICPA NA Chapter for all the work you do to support the growth and modernisation of correctional practice in America and around the world.

  • 🌟 Plenary Session Highlight: "Not My Crime, Still My Sentence: Ensuring a Child Rights-Based Approach When a Parent Goes to Prison''! 🔍Speaker: Professor Nancy Loucks PhD OBE, Chair, International Coalition for Children with Incarcerated Parents, United Kingdom 🔍 Session Overview: Research shows that maintaining positive family ties during imprisonment can reduce reoffending rates, but the reasons and evidence behind this need to be better understood. The ASPIRE project, led by Prof. Loucks, has explored the potential of extending the School Zone model to support children and families across Wales. This session will provide an overview of this research, discussing the benefits of family support in prison settings, as well as examining these benefits through the lens of child protection and children's human rights. Prof. Loucks will argue for the critical need to support families and children as more than just tools for resettlement. 🔍 About Prof. Nancy Loucks: Nancy is the powerhouse behind Families Outside, a Scottish voluntary organization dedicated to supporting families affected by imprisonment. With an MPhil and PhD from the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge, Prof. Loucks has an extensive background in criminology and public service. Awarded for her services to Education and Human Rights, she’s a key figure in several high-impact reviews and boards, including the International Coalition for Children of Incarcerated Parents (INCCIP) and Children of Prisoners Europe (COPE). • Did you know over 2 million children in Europe have a parent in prison? We, the ICPA community, need to work together to improve our polices, procedures, and built environments to ensure we are considering the rights of children. In 2018, the Council of Europe translated the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into actionable recommendations, including a child-friendly version in 8 languages. These guidelines help support children, parents, and professionals by advocating for the rights of children with imprisoned parents. These guidelines cover everything from basic principles to police detention, judicial orders, prison conditions, and much more. They serve as an invaluable resource for children, parents, and professionals alike. By sharing these recommendations, we aim to bring the voices of children with imprisoned parents to the forefront, advocating for their rights and ensuring they receive the emotional and material support they desperately need. Together, we can break the cycle of stigma and psychological stress, fostering a more understanding and supportive environment for these children. Join us in this important cause!
