The Canadian Centre for Nonprofit Digital Resilience recently released the Canada’s Nonprofit Tech Workforce Report & Digital Skills Demand by the Nonprofit Sector reports - the first two reports of their Futureproofing the Community Workforce Initiative. Here are 6 key findings from the studies: 1. Nonprofits have only one-fifth of the tech workers that other industries have. While other industries have on average 5% of their workforce in tech occupations, less than 1% of workers in nonprofits are doing work that is classified as tech work. 2. Tech workers in the nonprofit sector earn on average more than $30,000 less annually than tech workers in other industries. This means that tech workers are taking a pay cut of 33% by choosing to work in the nonprofit sector. 3. Visible minorities are all paid less for tech work than other workers. Women working in tech for nonprofits only earn 86% of what men working in tech for nonprofits earn, and other marginalized groups are similarly underpaid for tech occupations within nonprofit organizations. 4. Nonprofit jobs require fewer digital skills than jobs in adjacent sectors. 5. The share of nonprofit job postings requiring artificial intelligence skills increased by 32.7% in the second half of 2023. 6. The most sought-after digital skills in the nonprofit sector are related to popular workforce software such as Microsoft Office suite.
