Yesterday, a group of Alberta high school students affiliated with WISEST UAlberta toured our facilities. The tour included visits to some of our lab facilities and discussions about our work in microbiology with regards to mitigation in oil sands tailings ponds, as well as our approaches to using environmental genomics to support industry and government in their biodiversity monitoring needs. The tour also visited our Advanced Materials and Monitoring facilities, like our materials testing labs, and discussed welding, corrosion, nonmetallic materials and additive manufacturing research.  Thanks for coming by, WISEST! While generally effective, the process is inefficient, impacting operating costs and energy efficiency. 🔬 Dr. Stuart Schroeder, senior researcher at InnoTech Alberta, recently wrote an article for The Analytical Scientist about the technology he developed with fellow senior researcher Wade Hagman. The technology is called solution-cathode glow discharge (SCGD) and it enables online elemental analysis for industrial process control. 💡 Stuart explains that "improvements to SCGD will continue to be made, but the basics of operational principles have been established and this novel plasma is ready for commercialization – for which there is an appetite, driven by the industrial need for process optimization in real time."
