  • Inconsistent sampling procedures can lead to errors and safety concerns. Automating the sampling process improves measurement quality and provides precise date & time-stamped samples for accurate fiscal accounting. Plus, it frees up operations staff and ensures quality standards are met, even when facilities are unmanned. Automated sampling is the key to consistent, reliable results—no matter when the trucks arrive. We have compiled a video showing how Insight Analytical Solutions does Remote Automated Sampling. • I'm grateful to have had the honor to speak at the 2024 Alberta Cleantech Awards and talk about my friend and mentor, Joe Lukacs. Joe passed away recently at 90 years young, but his contributions to the environment and to entrepreneurism in western Canada will not be forgotten. For those not in attendance, here is what I had to say about Joe: When we are young, and have great aspirations for our lives, most of us have our heroes. That special someone, often famous, that we look up to. In the sports world now, they are often referred to as the G.O.A.T. – the greatest of all time. If you were a hockey player it may have been Wayne Gretzky or Bobby Orr, for a boxer Mohammed Ali or Rocky Marciano, for a human rights activist Mother Theresa or Nelson Mandela. As a young and aspiring physicist, mine was not Albert Einstein or Isaac Newton. For me it was Richard Feynman – the founder of Quantum Electrodynamics. Richard Feynman was an enigmatic genius, full of contradictions, who made extraordinary science look magically easy. He was an artist, a musician, a safecracker, a Nobel Laureate and one of the greatest educators ever in Physics. What I admired was that he was a Renaissance man – brilliant at many things. Joe Lukacs was a Renaissance man. From his roots as a farmer, he excelled at Physics. But Physics was too far from the land and helping people, so he studied engineering while pursuing personal photography as a hobby. He loved nature and the environment – Western Research had a coat of arms with the phrase “For the Rivers and the Trees” in Latin. He made environmental engineering his business and excelled at both the science and the business side of it. He remained a patron of the arts – and his boys have pursued art, business, and engineering. Joe was a Renaissance man and like Feynman, he loved to teach. I believe he loved to teach because he saw he could help environmental entrepreneurs be better. He did not want to grow businesses, he never picked winners. He grew people, literally hundreds of aspiring entrepreneurs were touched by his hand, his heart and his passion. He cultivated people, weeding their broken fields of false premises and incomplete plans, growing their understanding of business so they could nurture and bring their environmental solutions to the world. Joes’ philosophy on business parallels Feynman’s on Science "You must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool". It didn’t matter how great you thought your product was it mattered what the market thought. We all have our heroes.. most of them like the Gretzky's and Ali's and the Feynmans we never get to meet... they are icon's larger than life. The environmental and entrepreneurial community of Alberta was blessed to have a hero, an icon, that was real life, that prided himself on being available to the community and constantly gave himself to the world. And he was a crusty old G.O.A.T. at times. #hero #environmental #entrepreneurial #GOAT Phil Harris
