We were delighted to take part in this year's Wiener-paw-looza hosted by @canadiandaschundrescue in Carlington Park on Saturday, July 6. Huge thanks to all of the organizers, volunteers, vendors and folks that attended with their furry friends! We absolutely loved the costume contest and races! 🌿✨ Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day! ✨🌿 At Interval House of Ottawa, we stand in solidarity with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Turtle Island and acknowledge the critical need to respect and protect Indigenous protocol, traditions and rights. As a settler-led gender-based violence organization we know that it is our responsibility to educate ourselves and nurture meaningful relationships with Indigenous people, communities and organizations not only for the sake of ending the ongoing genocide of Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender expansive folks but also to mend our relationships with the land on which we work, play, cry and laugh. We are deeply grateful for all of the wisdom and teachings that have been shared with us and our organization through Indigenous elders, youth, survivors, artists and makers. We recognize that Indigenous people have been here since time immemorial and continue to gift us all with opportunities to follow down paths that lead us towards a world where the land and the water is protected. ✨💕 THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED!!! 💕✨ We did it! Our team ran in the 5K, 10K and half marathon races for @ottawaracewknd and we had a blast! One team member not only raised the most on the team but they also ran all three races - the 5K, 10K and half marathon! All funds raised through this event will go towards our second stage housing redevelopment project which will increase the number of housing units that we are able to offer to women and gender diverse folks who have experienced gender-based violence, intimate partner violence and/or family violence with their children and pets. We are delighted to share that we are an official Tamarack Ottawa Race Charity for the first time this! All funds raised through this event will go towards our second stage housing redevelopment project which seeks to increase the number of housing units that we are able to offer to women, femmes, Two Spirit, non-binary and gender diverse folks fleeing domestic violence with their children & pets. Second stage housing plays a vital role in supporting survivors of domestic violence transition to independent lives free from violence. The severe lack of affordable housing in the Ottawa area, combined with the shelters being constantly at maximum capacity, is having a devastating impact on families throughout Ottawa, particularly those who have survived or are experiencing violence. Interval House of Ottawa remains committed to finding innovative solutions to support as many survivors of violence & their families as possible by creating safe spaces where they can escape all forms of violence and abuse. As a community of support for survivors of domestic violence, Interval House of Ottawa sees Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend as an opportunity to demonstrate community solidarity for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). I know this project will provide safety, security and stability for survivors and their families for decades to come. The need for housing in our community has reached a breaking point. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to a small part of the solution." We are just TWO sleeps away from @ottawaracewknd and are feeling super excited to be participating as a charity for the first time! Board member @thejessielife shares why this race & initiative are important to her: Through my work in community mental health I've seen firsthand how desperately Ottawa needs more supportive housing and what a difference having safe, affordable housing makes in someone's life. If you don't have safe housing, not much else matters. A lack of safe housing is one of the top reasons why people stay in abusive situations and IHO's new building is directly helping to target this very issue. So, if anything can help motivate me to run 10 km, it's knowing that I'm doing it in support of this incredible cause! 📢 Alongside the National Association of Women and the Law, Interval House of Ottawa has signed an open letter urging the federal government to ban parental alienation accusations from being used in family law cases. 🏛 In June 2023, Reem Alsalem, UN’s Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls, its Causes and Consequences recommended that States “legislate to prohibit the use of parental alienation or related pseudo-concepts in family law cases”. ➡ We ask the Canadian Government to follow this recommendation. What is the concept of “parental alienation”? “Parental alienation” is pseudo-science. It is a vague concept that is not scientifically valid and is used almost systematically against victims of domestic violence. Despite their weak empirical basis, parental alienation accusations have become pervasive in Canadian family cases. Why is this an issue? This controversial theory is used to silence mothers who report family violence by the father. Parental alienation accusations are leading courts across the country to separate children from their mother and force them to live with their father, even when there is a documented history of family violence. What can you do? Help us protect women, children, and victims of family violence by sharing the word. 🌸Happy Mother's Day!🌸 At Interval House of Ottawa we know that this day can be full of complicated feelings. For many survivors there are not a lot of happy memories around this day and a lot of pressure to be all smiles anyway. We witness moms access our programs and services that need supportive, loving care to tend to their own wounds - physical, emotional, spiritual - while having to be a source of comfort and strength for their children and pets. We are grateful to be able to walk alongside so many wonderful moms who are working so hard to break free of cycles of violence and abuse. At Interval House of Ottawa we find joy in providing community care and support, especially on days like today, so we make sure the kids create gifts to tell their moms just how great they are and we come together to make sure the moms in residence have a special breakfast and gifts to open. We could not do this without the generous support of from donations that we receive. Nous sommes reconnaissants de pouvoir marcher aux côtés de tant de mères merveilleuses qui travaillent si dur pour se libérer des cycles de violence et d'abus. À la Maison Interval d'Ottawa, nous sommes heureux de fournir des soins et du soutien à la communauté, en particulier lors de journées comme celle-ci. Nous nous assurons donc que les enfants créent des cadeaux pour dire à leurs mères à quel point elles sont formidables et nous nous rassemblons pour nous assurer que les mères en résidence ont un petit déjeuner spécial et des cadeaux à ouvrir.
