🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 We are thrilled to announce the publication of a study in the Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine: "Point-of-Care Testing Biosafety Decisions: An Investigation Summary Illustrating Current Decision-Making Process in Ontario, Canada." This study, featuring significant contributions from IQMH, sheds light on the current state of POCT biosafety decision-making. With insights from over 200 laboratories, it highlights the crucial role of biosafety officers, microbiologists, and Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) staff. Key Findings: • High response rate from 88.7% of surveyed laboratories • Significant involvement of BSOs and microbiologists in lab-based POCT decisions • Gaps in SOP oversight and training for POCT biosafety outside traditional lab settings We are proud of IQMH’s contributions to this important research, emphasizing our commitment to enhancing health care quality and safety. Hina Hanif, National Hematology and Hemostasis Solution Specialist at Siemens Healthineers reflects on her time: “IQMH has adapted to the changing landscape of health care quality management by discussing topics like extended half-life products for hemophilia treatment, relevance of D-Dimer testing with COVID-19, etc. IQMH has expanded its scope to encompass a broader range of services such as POCT INR testing. As an IQMH committee member, being involved has provided me with valuable opportunities to contribute to the development and implementation of quality standards and practices within the hemostasis and thrombosis lab. It has allowed me to learn the latest advancements and best practices in lab quality management through participation in meetings, discussions, and collaborative initiatives.” Share your thoughts on how we can improve and what you’d like to see in the future. Dr. Rita Selby, MBBS, FRCPC, MSc, the Hematologist & Medical Director of Coagulation Laboratories, University Health Network and Sunnybrook HSC, Associate Professor, Departments of Lab Medicine & Medicine at the University of Toronto reflects on her time on the Hematology Scientific Committee as a former member: “Serving two terms on the IQMH Hematology Scientific Committee as the coagulation expert was one of the most academically rewarding aspects of my laboratory career. It helped me appreciate the impact that a mandatory, funded, external quality assurance program can have on the quality of laboratory medicine. This experience also exposed me to the practical implications of inter-assay variability on medical decision-making, leading me to explore a completely new research area. Six years after my term with IQMH concluded, I remain dedicated to pursuing this line of research.” Share your thoughts on how we can improve and what you’d like to see in the future. Dr. David Good is the Service Chief for the Hematopathology Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at Queen’s University and Kingston General Hospital. Dr. David Good reflects on his time on the Hematology Scientific Committee as the chair: “It has been an enjoyable and valuable experience, to be part of the IQMH Hematology Scientific Committee since 2016. Personally, it has enabled me to learn from committee members and participating labs, providing excellent continuing medical education. It has also provided valuable quality assurance guidance, which I have been able to apply to the day-to-day operations of my clinical lab practice. Meeting and collaborating with other Scientific Committee members has provided me with a knowledgeable network, and excellent resource to access for any questions that arise. I also feel that IQMH in general has evolved over the years from what was perceived as an oversight/regulatory body to a group of peer laboratorians that provide guidance, education and external quality assessment to ensure that each participating laboratory can keep current and aligned with best practices, resulting in quality processes and results.” Share your thoughts on how we can improve and what you’d like to see in the future.
