About us

On September 20th, 2019, JFE Shoji Trade Corporation acquired 100% of the shares of Cogent Power Inc, from Tata Steel Europe. Grouped together, the Cogent and JFE Shoji Steel America business make it possible for JFE Shoji to capture greater market share in the electrical steel market for both transformer and automotive products. The combination of Cogent and JFE Shoji has become one of the largest processors of electrical steel transformers in the world. JFE Shoji currently has many other production and processing facilities throughout Asia, as well as a facility in Tijuana, Mexico. Globally, JFE Shoji enhanced the business’ competitiveness by sharing and integrating the technical skill with deep business experience, which can be strongly applied to the global and North American markets. With this investment, JFE Shoji has one of the world’s leading processing and distribution functions for core design and manufacturing for transformers. Based in Tokyo, JFE is one the world’s largest steel producers with over 45,000 employees and operations globally.

  • It doesn't just appear in our homes by magic! ⚡️ Electricity travels a complex route to get to us, guided by a system similar to our highways. Highways allow cars to move from city to city in the same way our electrical grid moves energy from power plants to homes, schools, and businesses. 🚙 On a highway, when many cars use the same road and exceed what it was designed to handle, traffic slows down or comes to a standstill. 🚗 When this happens, it’s time to widen the road or upgrade it to keep traffic flowing smoothly. The same goes for our power grid. As our world grows more dependent on electricity, how we manage this ‘electric highway’ will shape the future. To support the increased demand, we will need to expand and upgrade our grid. We hope this metaphor helps clarify the issues surrounding our energy needs and how it’s affected by the current state of our grids. We’re on a mission to educate everyone about the importance of our grid infrastructure, while also working to build the systems we need to prepare for the future. 💪

  • Whenever you plug in your phone or turn on your TV, you expect it to work without any issues, right?  Now imagine one day waking up and nothing is functioning. Not just as a temporary, inconvenient blackout, but a sustained lack of electricity with no end in sight. For many Canadians, this could become a reality if we don’t address the growing challenges to our power grid. By raising our awareness about the challenges facing Canada’s power grid and the steps we need to take to stabilize it, we can help shape a better future for all Canadians. It's up to all of us to advocate for the changes we need to ensure a stable grid. Your daily actions and support for smart policies can make all the difference!  How can we, as a community, help support these necessary changes? Share your ideas in the comments! 💙

Moving to renewable energy is a powerful first step towards a better, healthier planet! 🌎 But how can we ensure a stable energy supply when nature is ultimately in control? 🌬️ 🧐 This transition is exciting, and for many, has provided reassurance when it comes to our future. However, there is still a big challenge behind this shift: Our electricity needs to remain reliable and steady as we use more of these green energy sources. Our old power systems were built for a steady flow of energy from sources like coal and gas. But wind and solar power don't work in quite the same way. Energy output can change from moment to moment. 🌥️ So, then, how DO we maintain a stable energy supply when nature is in control? 🤔 The answers, as explored in this compelling article in Power Mag, require creativity, technology, and community effort. 💡🤝 Read more about some of the new technologies that are helping to make sure our grids can keep delivering reliable power 👉 https://lnkd.in/de-aV_qj What are your thoughts on the challenges and solutions for grid stability? We’d love to hear your insights in the comments! 💬

This kind of teamwork is what drives our industry forward! 💡🤝   Last week, the JFE Shoji team had the honour of presenting the bluemint® award to our partners at Eaton Power Systems. It was an inspiring moment, celebrating our joint efforts toward a more sustainable world with Mark Komp from Eaton and thyssenkrupp Steel team members, Pascal Wellhäußer, and Matthias Schick. Eaton stands as a strategic client partner in the U.S., leading the way in the production of environmentally friendly #transformers using bluemint® materials.     bluemint® #electrical #steels, developed by Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steels is on the leading edge of #carbon-reduced steel products:   https://lnkd.in/gfyT2eqK   It's incredible what we can accomplish when we join forces! When companies come together like this to tackle a monumental challenge like reducing emissions, it sets a strong example for the whole industry. It shows that sustainable progress is both possible and necessary as our #energy needs keep growing, as well as the importance of teamwork in achieving large-scale societal goals.   The work we’re doing today, with our partners like Eaton, is a broader move towards a more responsible and #sustainable society in North America. It’s exactly the kind of teamwork we need to keep pushing our #industry toward a greener tomorrow. We're thankful for the chance to work together with industry leaders and share these wins!   Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved for your dedication and exemplary work!

  • Ron Harper, leading JFE Shoji Power Canada, has a clear message: Our power system is aging fast, and we’re not ready for the future. More than 70% of our electrical transformers need replacing, and we are too reliant on offshore supply chains for raw materials and equipment manufacturing. In this article from Canadian Manufacturing, Ron points out a glaring reality at the JFE Shoji plant: "We're at a tipping point. North America has just one major producer of the core material we need for transformers, and we're heading towards a severe shortage. We need to expand our local manufacturing and supply chains for this important electrical equipment". This gap threatens not just our power stability, but our progress toward a net-zero economy. Ron is fighting to boost our manufacturing capabilities and wants Canada to start making more right here at home. Let’s help him push our leaders to make the bold decisions we need to keep our homes and businesses powered reliably and sustainably. It's up to us to demand change. Will you join in? • A friend once showed me a photo of a sunset, painted in dusky pinks and grays, beautifully intersected by power lines with utility towers standing prominently in the middle. "Look," she said, "what a beautiful sunset," not bothered by, or even seeming to notice the grid that framed it. This immense network, the largest machine ever built and a crowning achievement of 20th-century engineering, quietly supports every facet of our modern existence. Yet, we seldom acknowledge its presence. The truth, however, is that the grid is not just something we built, but something that grew with our country, changed as our values changed, and gained its form as we developed as a nation. It represents not just an engineering solution but a cultural tapestry, a collection of business practices, and a living ecosystem. It truly is a testament to human ingenuity and a cornerstone of our modern existence.

  • We are all witnessing a pivotal moment in Canadian history! 💡 Canada’s Clean Economy ITCs are paving the way for unprecedented opportunities to accelerate our #grid modernization efforts. In this compelling call to action, Ron Harper, P.Eng., C.Dir. 🇨🇦 underscores the importance of broadening tax credits to enhance the entire electrical system. These are the kinds of actions that will serve Canadians today and well into the future. What changes do you hope to see in the #energy sector? How do you feel these tax #incentives could help? How can we together accelerate this transformation? We invite you to envision the future with us in the comments below. 💬
