Specialized Engineering for Glass, Cladding, and Glazing Systems. NFRC Certified Simulation Laboratory.
About us
In August of 1994, our founder, Mark Layton, started a company that has literally shaped the landscape of cities along the Pacific Northwest. Our family company grew from a small basement operation to a leading glass consulting firm under Mark's leadership until his sudden passing in 2015. Today, Layton Consulting Ltd. (LCL) has two offices, the main location in Langley, British Columbia, and a branch office in Calgary, Alberta. We continue to carry on Mark's tradition of providing quality engineering coupled with exceptional customer care by adhering to our founding principles. We are mainly a specialty structural engineering firm providing services primarily to the exterior cladding, curtain wall, glass and building component industries. We also have staff who are NFRC-certified to provide thermal modelling services for all types of fenestration systems.

Understanding energy performance standards in the construction industry is crucial for supplying windows to NetZero Homes. With the introduction of the BC Energy Step Code, the process has become more streamlined, allowing for the use of North American-certified products. Recently in a Podcast I mentioned that fenestration products have to meet 15 different performance expectations. Well, when I went to write them down today, I came up with 17. Am I missing any? We wonder why window and door manufactures are struggling to keep up with compliance. Is there any other building material that is regulated by so many different requirements? The important part that designers/specifiers need to know, is that 100% compliance cannot be met on all items. For example, acoustic consultants might want laminated glass but the structural engineer might want tempered glass. Large air space in IGU's is often specified for acoustic performance but this creates convection currents and impacts U value. Accessibility and ease of use on doors result in more air leakage. I could go and on... As the line in the sand for performance metrics moves such as lower U values, more airtight products, more accessibility, better acoustics for housing density, certain features are going to be harder and harder to achieve. As a result, designers need to think different and understand compromise and manufactures need to plan more for product development so these features can be met without adding significant costs. I've started to provide an architectural fenestration design review that is applied at the preliminary design stage of a project. Preferably before the development permit drawings are done. This way I can offer independent fenestration advice to the designers that can proactively address the conflicts that may occur or design alternate features that result in less conflict. This reduces surprises which often occur at the shop drawing stage.

Signorello Estate Winery | Napa Valley, California, USA | 2024 . Since 1977, Signorello Estate has stood as a symbol of Napa Valley excellence, known for their exceptional wines. But when the 2017 Atlas Fire devastated their cherished winery, they faced a profound challenge. . Rising from the ashes, Signorello Estate emerged with renewed purpose and a stunning new vision. Their rebuilt winery, now a beacon of resilience and innovation, goes beyond mere reconstruction—it’s a testament to extraordinary craftsmanship. . Garibaldi was honoured to be part of this transformation, providing seven precisely crafted glass passageways. These unique and beautiful passages are thermally and hermetically necessary to control and protect the various wines and caves enclosures . Using cutting-edge 3D laser mapping, we ensured each piece fit the unique contours of the wine cave rooms perfectly. In collaboration with Old Town Glass, Royal Glass, and other experts, we met tight deadlines to bring this vision to life. . This project is more than rebuilding; it’s a powerful statement of strength and creativity, proving that even after the darkest times, beauty and innovation can flourish. Field water testing of windows is crucial in ensuring products meet project requirements and integrate well with the building envelope. While not always a code requirement, it is a contractual obligation for manufacturers and installers. Understanding the specified test pressure and testing standard is crucial, along with often overlooked aspects like the definition of failure and environmental conditions during testing. Stay tuned for more insights into this vital practice with the latest LCL Fenestration Nerds Blog Post by Anton Van Dyk! #LaytonConsultingLTD #Fenestration #GlazingEngineering #Blog #FenestrationNerdsBlog #BuildingIndustry #WindowTesting https://lnkd.in/gQk6KiRG
