It centres around the idea of appeasing restless spirits and ancestors, ensuring their comfort and preventing potential mischief or harm from wandering ghosts who have been hungry since the start of Ghost Month. The festival is marked by elaborate ceremonies, offerings, and performances, providing a captivating cultural experience. Primarily celebrated in Chinese communities around the world, Hungry Ghost Month is observed in countries with significant Chinese populations such as #China, #Taiwan, #HongKong, #Singapore, #Malaysia, and various Chinatowns in cities globally. During this month-long period, various rituals and traditions are undertaken to appease and honour the spirits, such as ceremonial offerings, special feasts, incense, and burning joss paper, a papier-mâché form of material items such as clothes, gold, and other fine goods for the visiting spirits of the ancestors ceremonies, At the end of Ghost Month, to make sure all the hungry ghosts find their way back from whence they came, people float water lanterns and set them outside their houses. These lanterns are made by setting a lotus flower-shaped lantern on a paper boat. The lanterns are used to direct the ghosts back to the underworld, and when the flames go out, it symbolizes that they have found their way back.
