    The reality is there are hundreds of people applying for the same online job posting as you. Many of them will have the required experience. You will most likely hear radio silence even though you’ve made sure to include the right keywords in your skills section and have written a brilliant professional profile that lines you up perfectly as a top candidate. It’s brutal. We know. Having connections at the organization is a huge benefit to landing a screening call. Times have changed exponentially but for my last 5 roles, which is almost all of them in media - the people hiring me already knew me. My story is not unique. Now more than ever, who you know and who knows you is a significant factor in your success. Make sure you are tapping into the companies where you have contacts, maybe they are about to hire and don’t even know you are looking. Ask friends to vouch for you and to help you make introductions. Do some sleuthing and see what connections you have in common at the organization. Follow individuals who you have deduced are likely hiring managers at companies you would like to join and engage with their LinkedIn posts.     When applying for a posted role you should expect to be up against hundreds of other applicants. Many of the other applicants will also have the required years of experience and have similar qualifications. You’re in a virtual sea of same trying to breakthrough to a pre screening interview. So how can you stand out? One of the ways to stand out and differentiate yourself is in your professional profile. This is in many ways the modern abbreviated equivalent of a cover letter. The professional profile is your elevator pitch. This is a place where you can demonstrate your ability to narrate a curated well articulated snapshot of yourself. This should be short, to the point and showcase how the culmination and breadth of your experience lines you up well and demonstrate how you will add value to this role and organization. It is harder to do than it sounds. It often takes several rounds of edits and outsiders feedback. When you are working on your profile you want to keep in mind that you are trying to answer the question “What’s in it for me?” from the employers perspective. Everyone can read your work history - but your ability to craft a story that is compelling is where you can win. The majority of people struggle to deliver an excellent profile and having one will help you rise to the top. If you are applying in marketing, sales, PR or editorial capacity the expectation for you to be able to market yourself and your skills will be higher than it would be in other roles.
